I knew, I looked it up. It just seemed random in the wrestling thread lol
Well UFC and mixed martial arts/combat sports borrow alot of elements from pro wrestling. (People think it's all fully legitimate but I can tell they play it safe to preserve their health like wrestlers do in the ring. ?

Dave Meltzer on the Punk news (pardon his editing lol):

If C.M. Punk is to come back to pro wrestling, it looks like it will be here. He was very political in his speech at the last Starrcast, talking about how he’s grown up, doesn’t have animosity toward WWE and said that if they were to call he would listen. We’d already reported that Punk’s rep had gone to FOX to try and push him to be a co-host of the FS 1 talk show, but WWE wasn’t interested in him for that, even though he’d probably be good at it. Really, him doing that show would only make sense if he’s going to come back to wrestle, because the minute he’s on a WWE broadcast, the people will want him to wrestle again. So hiring him to host the show would immediately make the show about him rather than the news. It’s basically the feeling that even though WWE went after him hard with the lawsuit that cost him a ton of money, like seven figures, that WWE is the place he feels he can make the most money. Given he’s about to turn 41 next month, and main eventers are making for the most part for more now than they were during Punk’s heyday, and the age makes the clock tick about how long your window to make that money is, you can see the mentality. Punk did make a ton of money as a babyface in his last few years because his T-shirts were huge and did well as champion as a heel although he did not once he made a lot less money because when he turned his merch sales went way down. Plus, he’s seen more guys on the roster who are being allowed to work fewer dates. The impression from WWE is that they believe he wants back in but right now it’s nothing they are counting on doing. He did get an opening offer from AEW sometime back but then made himself scarce and was negative to them in that Marc Raimondi interview and as best we can tell, there has been no contact since

Just wondering what everyone else's thoughts were.

Do you guys think that WWE should go back to only doing promos backstage like how Brother Love, Savage, Hogan and Ventura used to? I watched a Ventura shoot and I'm really coming around to the idea that the ring is only for wrestling.

I think it depends on the situation and whether it makes sense or will have more impact in front of a live crowd. Just grabbing a mic and quickly saying their piece before or after a scheduled match is usually fine by me but it bugs me though when they come out just for an unnecessary promo that could have easily been done backstage.

Like those all too common Raw opening segments of wrestler 1 talks, wrestler 2 interrupts, stuff is said and it all leads to the main event should just be a 5 minute backstage interview either sold as 'earlier today' and shown just before match 1 or live just after match 1.

I agree on that, and I think pre-recordings can always be done over in case it just comes out lame. Like when Vince was forcing Roman to do Looney Tunes lines like "Sufferin' Succotash" and everyone booed him because it wasn't cool and it was corny.

And I think good ring promos are mostly challenges from heels: Kurt Angles Open Challenge to John Cena and when John Cena did the same and it kicked off his feud with Taker.. even though it was kind of "skit"-ish

Punk should only come back if he's passionate about it imo, atm it only seems like;

“I'm done with wrestling, Vince's money isn't worth the misery I suffered. Let's give UFC a chance”

-5 years later-

“Vince's money is better now with the FOX deal, maybe I can put up with the wrestling. I was shit at UFC anyway”

What Frayz said. Depends on the type of promo they do. I think some promos work better when they do it backstage. Jake "The Snake" Roberts is a great example. I don't think his promos work better when he's in front of the crowd as opposed to being backstage, imo.

He's not coming back to wrestle right now, I think. He can watch wrestling now after years of saying he wanted nothing to do with it.

He's not coming back to wrestle right now, I don't think.
Doesn't really change my opinion on the matter, I feel it's just as important for him to passionate about wrestling even if he's only there as a host. Especially if he's working with a guy like Booker who oozes with enthusiasm for wrestling lol

I honestly think Punk still has a big head and needs to come up off it or just support shows like AEW or NWA

I have no problem with Punk coming back to wrestling in any form, whether he's hosting for WWE, wrestling for AEW or whatever else. It actually excites me tbh but as long we're getting the Punk of old who is a wrestling fan, not just some guy who's only there for a quick payday lol

I'm gonna backseat Booker for a second.

Another thing that bothers me is that they kind of wasted Samoa Joe v Roman Reigns. Both of them are badass Samoans and Roman has the esteemed lineage. You can turn him heel and make him a rough blueblood Samoan that looks down on Samoa Joe or just have Samoa Joe comes out and wants a title match with Reigns and you build up to mania.

I will take that over any Lesnar main event. I know Joe really did a great job in his classic with Kurt Angle at Victory Road and Reigns can be really cool when he puts on a tough match. Or just have Joe knockout Roman with a submission just like Austin vs Bret in the I Quit match. That'd be money

Yeah instead of the Rowan storyline, I think they should've used the attacks as a double turn. Even if it made no sense, they could of done a cool story where Roman was revealed to be behind the attacks just to set Joe up for them. Maybe it could of been like you said, Roman looks down on Joe and just wanted everyone to see him like he sees him.

I think the only problem is that Romans kid watches, so he wants to be a face... So I guess Joe will have to be a mega heel (which he can be) and beat Roman

True, they probably won't turn Roman anytime soon no matter how many good opportunities there are to do it lol

Joe probably needs a face turn or an extended push as a heel to be taken as seriously as he should though. Random world title matches that he never manages to win just won't cut it, he needs to look dominant for a really long time.

I recall there was a rumor that Vince pulled the plug on turning Joe face back when they started this whole mystery attacker storyline. Writing staff orginally wanted Joe to turn face right after Roman got hit by the car but Vince changed that at the last minute of course.

But on a more postive note: I got to go to NJPW's FSU event in Lowell last week and it was fucking great. Got some great merchandise and cool attire to try out for next time. But I am happy to say the crowd was pretty good imo. (I heard that there was a massive delay at the NYC event because of ambulance not arriving on site).

I am looking for to this week. Monday Night Raw's new stage looked good but fucking god they truly don't learn. Product is still teh same turd with new polish!

But this made me die laughing.

Breaking the Throne with Corbin's fat ass.
Randy and Corbin corpse on live stage.

I actually enjoyed the show as a whole a lot more than usual tbh, that Lana/Lashley angle was bad though and Lawler really didn't need to mention how “the spectre of The Fiend is looming over the arena” after every goddamn commercial break lol

Ey! They have someone on the roster now who could beat up Brock in a real fight.

Definitely massive, that's for sure lol

I wanna see how this goes, Rey being his hype man or whatever might be a smart move too as they can still use him but in a way that gives him a break from the ring.

Sucks Kofi's run had to end like that though
