Looking back at this scene, why is it that an experienced and skilled fighter freaks out in this manner to someone blowing an explosion at him? Was he genuinely afraid of an explosion?
Wink wink, it's not because of the explosion. It's what made the firing off of the explosion possible, namely the elasticity of bamboo which itself was hardened. The fact that Vergo can combine elasticity with armament makes it that much stronger as the added combination of the hardness and the elasticity makes it tougher. As opposed to steel that easily snaps when you apply enough force, if you have a higher elastic limit for your material you will need that much more force to break through as it can better absorb the impact. Vergo's bamboo is both extremely hard ("sturdier than steel (as in sturdier than retconned Mr.1) as it says in the VC) but combined with the ductility/elasticity means that this is an very resiliant material that can resist blunt force deformation extremely well. Only way you break through his bamboo is by cutting it which you can only do if your armament is harder (CHOU KOUKU) or by having Law's 5 billion berry hax ability.
This is the next level of armament hardening, hence why Smoker freaked out. Vergo has as of yet been the only one to display this combination. Luffy who is rubber makes use of the combination of hardening and compressability of his rubber which adds to his tensional force, but reason why he is more durable is because this combination of hardening and elasticity makes him much stiffer. Vergo has mastered the first level of armament so well that he can combine hardening with elasticity to make his bamboo into a resiliant and tough material on top of already being very hard. Smoker had every reason to fear what he was up against.
GIve it up to the right hand man of the future PK who will come back with a vengeance
