Which type of game are you looking into?
I suggest looking at ToS (Town of Salem) since it's like mafia with training wheels.

To put it bluntly.

Town ( good guys ) that has more players on their team needs to kill Mafia ( Bad guys ) that has less players on their team before Mafia kills Town. Outside good and bad guys you have Neutrals who in most cases try to fuck both sides.

Mafia team knows who is in their team
Town team doesnt know who is in their team

Game is played in 2 phases.
First one is day phase where you use detective skills to figure out who is bad and who is good. Then at the end players decide who to lynch ( kill )

Second phase is night, no talking there. But in night you use abilities your role has in order to further help you win
