Hi thrillerbark,
My theory concepts have never been popular. One Piece theorists who have knowledge of other works or talk about philosophy end up getting alienated by the rest of the community because we mention ideas that don't occur to just anybody and most people only agree with what occurs to them.
This is an idea based on other works.
I propose that many of the phenomena in the story end up as an ability that can be described as an extension of the body of a person. Namely, this includes technological matters. However, I propose that the technology in One Piece may be advanced to such a degree that Devil Fruits themselves are a form of technology and that they seem magical because they're both (1) based on advanced technology (2) based on immaterial substance called divine light which is the same thing as magic.
This is the entire concept behind people in the story saying, "Devil Fruit abilities aren't magic!"
The funny thing about them saying that is they didn't add an additional part to it until a special episode where Luffy mentioned "It's not magic, but it's pretty close!" whereby the creators of the story were admitting on their part that it actually is pretty close to magic... and if you don't believe in what they believe... then it becomes just as ridiculous as magic. Basically, the technology in the story is based on souls in humans. So, it's soul technology. Even Devil Fruits are soul technology.
So, when it comes down it, it's magical because it's based on the power of souls. So, it's pretty close to being magic. Except, it's not... because it's based on spiritualism and the concept of magic implies "something from nothingness". Spiritualism doesn't propose the absurd concept of "something from nothingness", instead it proposes that souls have a quantifiable power that can be harnessed and controlled.
Weird, right? Yeah, whatever. It's still a fun story even if you know that.
Note: I am going to point out right now that many readers of One Piece think that Logia type Devil Fruit users *generate infinite amounts of a substance*. That is an absurd idea which relates to the absurd concept of "something from nothingness". The author was hoping nobody would question that when they wrote it. If you end up believing in the concept of "something from nothingness", you're considered absurd by both (1) writers AND (2) scientists because both criticize other writers or scientists if they have a stupid idea like that without the subject being a nonsense story or crackpot theory. You would get laughed out of both the literary community and the scientific community for doing such a thing.
