Oden who was captured and Killed (boiled alive exactly) by Kaido 20 years ago. Used to b dual sword user and is the only person who gave famous scar to Yanko Kaido.
As much as I remember Shanks form his crew after Roger's death 22 years ago.
And had ruthless duel with current WSS around 20 year ago..
The timeline matches and I guess after Oden's death Mihawak was considered as the WSS.

If both Shanks and Mihawk did an endless spar through the years and consider themselves rival in that league, same goes for Oden and someone else. We were not told who taught Mihawk swordsmanship and so as Shanks but I think that it could be Oden or someone from their crew.

Previous WSS may be Oden. He is a samurai and considered king of Wano. It's only fair to give him that title. As to why it wouldn't be known to public, well, we only get to know Oden this current arc and there's still alot of mystery surrounding his character. Maybe one of these days, we get some light about the depth of his greatness..

Well for certain among everyone who has tried to harm Kaido, apparently only Oden has been able to give a wound. So is fair to say he was very strong and probably the WSS before Mihawk if not close to the strongest back in the day

Well, Oden didn't got introduce until now... and overall people bearly talk about Roger much less his crew members unless they are introduce like Rayleigh was. Probably soon we will get a deeper story.

Leader of Wano being WSS makes more sense to me. And it also hype Wano's swordmanship . No wonder WG r so cautious about Wano . It certainly not only because of the legend of Ryuma.

Another point is , Luffy and Zoro's first interaction. When Luffy saved Zoro and he accepts Luffy's proposal , Luffy comment about having WSS in pirate kings crew .
I also used to think that Rayleigh was previous WSS but Oda had entire arc focused on him but he didn't introduced him or hint him being previous WSS.
On other hand , leader of Wano with legend of the only one hurting Kaido , increase chance of Oden's as previous WSS

Yeah with this i hope people stop saying Zoro is new Rayleigh and just deal with him being new Oden.

AFAIK we still don't know precise time about when Mihawk get that title. I think it's more perfect if Mihawk become WSS after beat the previous one.

But yeah, for now, Oden seems most possible for that (strength factor only).
Sadly, until now Oden get famous because he's previous Kuri's daimyo and one of Roger's crew.
