I was wasn't a fan of that either but that's tv for you, I think it was just to make them actually hate each other instead of the one sided 'he stole my dad' lol That said, they do tone it down in season 2 and the conflict mostly comes from Dojo vs Dojo.

As somebody who wasn't a big Karate Kid fan, I was surprised at how good this show really is. And that cliffhanger at the end of season 2 ? can't wait to see the fallout from that lol
