[CONOMI ISLANDS]
Post 8 - [ @Emperor Cross | @Einsauer ]
The air felt too tight to breathe, thick with blood and salt, and Sam knew before he lifted his head that nothing here was finished. Gochi’s laughter rang out sharp and ugly, echoing between the buildings as he turned fully toward him, those wide eyes locking onto the bruises and torn scales that still stung with every breath. Sam’s muscles tensed on instinct, body screaming at him to move, to strike, to do anything but stay where he was, yet his feet stayed planted, heavy as stone.
Shaarib’s voice cut through the noise, calm but carrying, and Sam felt the shift immediately. The kind that came just before violence, when everyone stopped pretending and started choosing sides. Gochi did not take the offered hand, did not back down, only puffed himself up further, brag and fury twisting together as he spoke of conquest and names and pride. Sam could hear it clearly now, the challenge, the promise of blood that followed every word.
Then the blind man spoke, and that changed everything. The threat was not loud, but it was real, and Sam felt it in his bones. Either lead them to Arlong or be broken where he stood. Simple. Brutal. Honest. Gochi’s grin twitched, and for the first time there was something uncertain in it, something sharp and dangerous rather than playful.
Sam shifted his stance, lowering his centre, hands curling slowly as heat ran through his arms. He did not know who would strike first, only that when it happened there would be no space left for words. Around them the town had gone silent, shutters closed, breath held, waiting to see which monster would move.
And Sam was ready to meet whichever one did.
