Had Wafer been paying attention to much going on outside of his workspace he might have actually been worried by the screaming and yelling. These weren't noises coming from his work. He was denying people hefty doses of drugs if they didn't need them and giving hardened sailors a few pinprick feelings while he stitched them up. A yelp was certain, but not a scream. He wasn't rearranging innards here and a lot of his observations required less invasive measures to study his patients.

So whatever Sura heard probably should have inspired some measure of worry in anyone that actually did come across it. Meanwhile, Wafer pulled away from his latest bit of work and ushered an overly talkative man out the door before welcoming another and going right back to it.

"Well, that was a short trip out then... still, saving a group of civilians from the horrible death at the hands of a sea king or other mysterious monster isn't too bad for our first day." Lending a hand here and there to help settle their rescued victims in - but avoiding the doctor's cabin - Swan made his way back to his workroom, putting a few last changes to his equipment and then laying his head down on the table to get a quick nap in as their made their way back. It wouldn't be long, but it'd be enough to keep his head in the game once they arrived back in Las Camp and had to get back into things. Within moments, he was out like a light.

It would seem little time at all with all the hustle and bustle about the ship before they arrived back at Las Camp as the sun had nearly set under the horizon. All but one of them remained extremely busy as the doctor attended to everyone on board one at a time and the cook and his impromptu assistant took to serving hot food and warming beverage while doing their best to keep everything calm and collected. Even Ein and Fenrir were there to keep everything level and keep an eye on everyone involved to ensure no funny business, panic or acts of violence broke out on board. Ein would also certainly be available for conversation or concerns if they required one of her stature to answer or if the person involved simply felt more comfortable speaking to the captain of the ship. Things would go by quickly for one of them, however... because he was napping. His timing was way off.

Once all the merchants were safely off the ship and onto dry land, Ein saw them off with a quick wave and a goodbye without much more thought concerning the matter. She'd already called in their estimated time of arrival to base long before they made it so the men would likely find themselves with adequate accomodations until they could find a way back home. So far as Ein was concerned, her job was done so far as the crew was involved. Her mind had been on the sea beast that had attacked the ship the entire time. For now, however...

She addressed her collection of troops as they all stood aboard the ship awaiting further orders as she'd already told them to do. If any were absent or otherwise not listening, she'd be certain to find them and scold them before giving them the exact orders she was about to relay.

"I'll be honest..." she began. "I didn't expect to accomplish anything at all on our first day at sea, but our first day as a crew turned out to be quite the eventful outting and I'd like to consider this rescue mission a success even as simplistic as it was." She paused for a moment there, letting her crew take in her words and react as they liked before she continued. "However, I feel like our crew is lacking a certain something that others have and I'd like to find that spark and ignite it in each and every one of us. In light of that, I'd like to have a word with each of you in turn in my quarters before you turn in for the night. After we've spoken, you can either choose to sleep in your previous bed in the base as an unexpected second last night treat... or you can sleep aboard the ship. It's your choice."

At that, she'd scratch Fenrir atop his head before motioning him to follow her as she took a step straight backward toward the entrance to below deck where her quarters lay. "Kaelem, you're up first. Don't worry, there's no particular order..." And at that, she allowed a wicked little smirk to play across her lips before turning away just as quickly as it appeared so it could almost seem like an illusion.

The crew of the Marie while usually being upbeat and quite boisterous on their own ship were meek here, mostly on the orders of Elmer the now defacto leader of the shipwrecked crew. The loss of the Captain was also felt by all the crew, as was the insistent poking and prodding of the Marine crew's doctor, which didn't help morale much either. Elmer while not being able to keep tabs on his crew the whole time was borrowing paper from Ein and writing his report to the investors he'd worked for, even getting an official note from Ein in the down time, which with such a busy ship, wasn't much.

Many of the men of the Agatha Marie were seafaring men at heart, but all of them were more than happy to see land, and walk upon solid ground, after having a ship ripped out from under you by something so powerful, like a force of nature, it wasn't too much to ask for solid land. And Solid land was exactly what Ein delivered, when the crew saw it their spirits immediately improved.

Fenrir was quite busy, herding the crew out of the more restricted spaces, namely Ein's quarters. Sailors were sure a lonely lot, weren't they?

The Seawolf was on deck for Einhardt's little speech about the crew's commitment to such a vessel, and such a journey. Fenrir's commitment wasn't to the ship or the journey, but to the Marines here. So he would sit quietly watching the three of them as their captain spoke to them. And with the motion to follow Fen would stay practically in lockstep with his captain as she moved down below deck to her quarters.

As the pair reached a point where all that was really left to do was allow for a few extra minutes of “stewing”, Kaelem took a step back and smiled at their work. “Yeah, they’ll like it.” He would use Sura’s help for awhile longer to help serve the food to all of the merchants before letting Sura loose to do whatever he wanted to do. Kaelem would use the time to do what he did best: avoid wanton social interaction! The cook slinked back into his room and rummaged around for a book on fishing, something that could be a bit useful on a wide variety of fronts.

He was able to keep mostly to himself as they sailed back to base. Occasionally people would knock at his door to ask for an extra serving or three, and he would oblige them. The trip back felt much shorter with the myriad of distractions. Word got to Kaelem that he was to see the civilians off the ship with the rest of the crew. Once the rhythmic lapping of the waves against the ship were interrupted by the crash of the anchor, Kaelem found a place in his book of Fishing Blues to stop and made his way top side. Watching the white wolf taking the role of shepherd dog put a childish smile on his face, but he knew it was a serious job. It was important to make sure they had no stowaways when they set sail again.

With all of the civilians ushered onto the dock, Kaelem stood at the ready with the other crewmates that had heeded Nihoff’s words. He held his arms behind him, one hand grasping the wrist of the other. Head held high and at attention, Kaelem made himself out to look as professional as he could lest he anger the captain. Not that he could hold it long into Nihoff’s speech. His shoulders eased and grinned at the mention of a job well done. A simple start, as Nihoff admitted, but a start nonetheless. Ms. Nihoff continued on, speaking about the crew’s missing “thing”. Kaelem had a feeling he knew what the thing was. One-on-one talks. Great. This should be fun… he thought to himself as the grin faded away. It became a full-on pout when the captain said he was first. And then he saw the smile. Maybe? Kaelem saw something that made his head tilt and a chill run up his spine. …I have a bad feeling she’s lying about their being no particular order… He sighed at his own thoughts, following the captain and her wolf from a few feet away.

Though he fancied a place in the crow's nest, Sura helped Kaelem with his dish with alacrity. Interestingly, he found it rather gratifying helping cook food for the survivors of a tragic incident. Despite this, the moment he was free, Sura wasted no time running upstairs. He still hasn't learned how to control his urge to entertain himself. Upon reaching the top of the deck, he took a deep breath of the fresh air embellished with the sweet scent of the Sea. He gently placed his hand on the mast and looked up at the crow's nest before jumping high in the air and making himself at home there. He then went over his day in his mind as he gazed upon the setting sun that bled its bright red color onto the cloudy evening sky. He pulled out a cigarette from his pocket before lighting it up. He had left his cigarettes out to dry under the sunlight earlier during the day as they were drenched in saltwater.

"What an interesting day. I rowed myself all the way to the ship just to go back to where I set off." he thought to himself as he took his first puff. He noticed how the filter had a salty flavor and found it rather amusing before letting out a subtle, seemingly involuntary smile. It seemed like his day had gone by too quickly, he was barely on the ship for a few busy hours and yet, a lot has happened. "My first day as a proper Marine was quite fun" he felt.

As he saw the dock at Las Camp approach, Sura ashed his cigarette and climbed down the mast. He dropped the anchor as the ship reached the dock and thus caused it to come to a halt. He waved the survivors goodbye as they all safely made their way onto solid ground in a manner that seemed almost as though he had forgotten the fact that he was suspicious of them not too long ago. He then proceeded to stand in position attentively, just as Ein instructed him and his fellow crew mates to, awaiting any further commands.

After hearing what Ms. Nihoff had to say, Sura was rather nervous. Not because he was scared of her, but because he had no idea what it meant for him. What does Ms. Nihoff have in store for him? What does she mean by "spark"? However, he was just glad that he wasn't the first one to find out what this is all about and so he let himself relax a bit as Kaelem followed the Captain and the dog. Sura spent the next few minutes walking around the ship and leaning against the mast thinking about what Ein would like to say to him. He was also curious about what the others thought about it and so walked up to Swan and asked him his opinion.

Very little of what had followed his work stirred any sense of urgency out of Wafer. He had effectively cleared each and every one of his patients. Now he was convinced none of them were afflicted with anything too debilitating, and satisfied with his own ministrations. Food was welcome, but only because it was a necessity. Wafer was not a gourmand, nor was he an avid eater. He picked things apart and set things aside until whatever portions he had set aside felt perfectly suited to his body and his condition. He was plenty healthy, so what he took would not seem to be much, but it was measured in his head to be adequate to his needs and what he would burn through private calisthenics and time.

Of course, when the day drew to a close and they docked to send away their passengers, Wafer found himself listening to Ein passively. Listening was expected of him, and understanding was important for fulfilling his role on the ship as a crewmate and a doctor. However, what she said clashed quite directly with much of his own personal philosophy. He wasn't a dimwit. This spark she hoped for was about camaraderie. A bond between the lot of them to encourage familiarity and potentially friendship. Bonds would encourage them to go to greater lengths to stand for their brothers in arms and allow them to fight not simply for themselves but for each other. In Wafer's case, this was already accomplished, but not because he felt anything so whimsical for any of his allies.

No, what Wafer possessed was a driving force far more personal to him than that. They were his patients. Their lives would depend on him in countless ways and could even call on him to explore them in a manner too invasive even for lovers. So he did not need a spark. He did not need anything to encourage him to go above and beyond for those around him. He was already there. He was already set. Of course, he would not develop any genuine emotion or positivity toward them. Not all of them. The first impressions he had suggested that he might achieve something not unlike friendship with the inventor, the dog, and the cook. Their latest arrival, that clearly took more joy from the sea than the work of a marine was beyond his favor. And their commanding officer? He would not speak ill of her, but she insulted him in his practice and he was not likely to let that go even if she apologized. This was fine, though. He did not need to enjoy her company or like her. He simply needed to provide her with the best possible care he could and follow the orders he was given.

"Good luck!" Swan called after Kaelem as he was called to the first meeting with their Captain, smiling slightly. It was hard to tell if he meant it seriously or not, especially considering the mystery of what these meetings were to be about still being unresolved. He wasn't exactly sure himself, deciding to wander a short way away to the rail and wait to be called in, lost in thoughts as he looked at the waves. It took a moment for their newest arrivals words to break through, and when they did, he blinked, turning to look at Sura. "Sorry? Oh, the Captain?"

He fell silent again for a moment, then shrugged unhelpfully. He'd almost certainly known her the longest of anyone there, unless they were hiding a past and the dog was much older than a normal dog, but that wasn't providing a lot of insight. "I couldn't say for sure, but if I was going to guess, she might want to know why we all joined the marines, to see what our inspiration for it was. That could be the kind of spark she wanted." Well, his suspicion was that she wanted them to be friends, considering they'd have to spend so much time alone on the sea together, but that wasn't the sort of thing you could rush in his book. It'd take time, but it'd be inevitable. Or else they'd try to kill each other. One or the other. And having a one on one talk with her wouldn't do much to speed the process up. "So, what about you?" The black suited second in command of the ship looked over at Sura again, "Why did you join the marines?"

It didn't take long for the three of them to reach the captain's quarters as it was one of the nearest rooms to the deck, ensuring that Ein was close at hand should she be resting and some sort of emergency broke out. The room itself was cloaked in the dim light of approaching night as she silently opened the simple door, stepped inside and held it open both for Fenrir and for Kaelem.

"Do come in..." she finally spoke forebodingly as she waited for him to step inside. He would be the first to have the 'privilege' of seeing how Einhardt had decorated her private space with the funds afforded to her for doing so. Considering her only recently granted minor role and generally uncelebrated rank, it was obviously not much as most of her room was largely spartan and bare aside from the simple bed off in the corner and the considerably more expensive looking old Victorian clawfoot table large enough for two to sit across from one another comfortably. Matching the table were two plush chairs of similar design, the cushions almost looking a blood red in the slowly dying light. Set atop the table was a simple candle and an elaborate incense burner that appeared to be made from pewter or some similar metal.

Ein was quick to strike a match from the book she'd lifted from the unremarkable shelf beside the door, using it to light the candle at the center and illuminate the room a bit more nicely in a flickering, warm candlelight.

"Please, have a seat," she instructed, motioning toward the free chair across from where she was already pulling a chair out so that she could sit as well. "So it would appear that you follow orders well enough. What I requested of you was finished quite adequately, after all. You did a very good task, but I couldn't help that the moment you were able, you fled as quickly as possible and I didn't see you again until you arrived on deck. May I ask what happened and what you were doing?"

It smelled nice in here. Except the smell of fear, that was. A smell that was emanating from Kaelem, that was fine because he'd sat next to Ein's seating, and watched for the exchange, his tongue lolling out of his mouth. As he looked between the two people in the room, stopping on the blonde woman as she spoke succinctly, cornering the big man, though only a small portion of his size, it would seem she was more of the predator here.

Nothing like a nice excruciating walk to the superior’s room to get the nerves wracking. Beads of sweat culminated on his brow, which Kaelem made sure to wipe away before Nihoff saw them. The room was as organized as he had expected of her, but it was oddly mismatched. The homely bed seemed out of the place amidst the fancier table and chairs. Maybe it was a work in progress, or maybe they had some sentimental value.

The musings were brushed aside when told to take a seat. He complied with only a moments hesitation, careful to not rough up the cushions. His sitting posture was anything but formal; one legged tucked underneath the other and both hands stuffed unceremoniously underneath the crossed knee. The flickering fresh candlelight gave Nihoff’s green eyes an ominous glow as she began her “talk”.

“Oh, uh...” Kaelem swayed slightly in his seat as he recalled. “Once I finished cooking up the food and serving it, I went to my room to read up on fishing because that might be useful to get our provisions to last a, uh, extra few days or so. Uh, Sir.” He kept his eyes locked on the captain to the best of his abilities, cheeks turning a bright red as he stumbled over his own words. “I didn’t want to be in the way of all of the people on board as well. It would be one less body in the way? I thought?”

"Oh, you really think so? Makes sense I guess. I'm Sura by the way. I joined the Marines because..." Sura paused for a brief moment as his eyes slowly dipped in a way that suggested he was contemplating his past. He soon snapped out of it and continued "...well, long story short, I want to protect a certain village and I despise most pirates. I've seen enough pirates ruining the lives of innocent people than I can handle. Pirates may claim to sail the seas in search of freedom, but all I've ever seen them do is pillage ships and plunder towns. What sort of 'freedom' is that?" al the while growing visibly agitated and tensed. But he calmed himself down. After all, he is now a Marine and can do something about the atrocities committed by pirates.

"How about you? Why did you join the Marines?" he asked politely, with a genuine smile on his face, continuing his first personal conversation with his fellow crew member.

"Hm." Swan looks, not uncomfortable as the question is put to him, but certainly a little bit awkward after hearing the reasoning for his slight subordinate joining the navy. "Well...." A moment of hesitation, and then it's gone, Carrera looking boldly out to sea, with no hint of regret in his voice. "I joined because the women in uniform look super hot." He grins. "Even the Captain, even though she doesn't wear her uniform. And I want to help people, obviously, but mainly, it's because of the uniform." Leaning against the railing, he holds his hands out like framing an imaginary picture, "It's just, the best, don't you agree? The way the tight buttoned top strains against their chest, the way the pants hug their waist..." He trails off into a happy, contemplative silence.

Einhardt's posture in the aged, yet pristine chair was rigid and entirely formal. She sat with her back straight and her hands on the table, folded together calmly. She was obviously not nearly as nervous as the man she'd brought down with her to share words.

The entire room held within it an aromatic, smoky air of various flowers and spices, likely remnants of Ein's currently unlit incense. Ein herself regarded Kaelem with a bit of thoughtfulness, her head cocking a bit to the side. She was, perhaps, looking straight through him and to the wall behind him as her eyes seemed to lose a bit of focus.

"So you intend to bolster our supplies with fish from the sea? So you've brought a fishing pole as well? And this won't detract from your other duties, correct?" She tossed out a few questions one right after the other, her eyes coming back into focus the moment she blinked, as if they'd suddenly remembered there was another person in the room to look at.

Fenrir watched between the two as they talked back and forth, he liked both of these people, Plucky at least played with him, and fed him. And the Blonde Woman was alpha as fuck. So there was no reason he wouldn't like being around her.

Still Plucky was sweating his ass off like he was in the sauna. "Ruh?" Fenrir asked as well tilting his head a little along with the sound, as he looked at Plucky like he had a dick for a nose. It was a serious question after all, and deserved an answer.

He shuffled in his seat, alternating which leg got to be the uncomfortable one being sat on. Kaelem took a moment to study Nihoff’s features as he waited on her response. Sharp, angular facial features framed by a loose twin drill hairstyle. All of the baby blue highlights gave her frosted, cold look that only uped the regal, commanding atmosphere that surrounded her. Her eyes had a piercing quality to them, as if she was not looking at the person she was talking to but the very heart of the person. But, something was slightly off about them now.

And suddenly she kicked back into the conversation, almost like she had zoned out and was trying to catch up. Kaelem even looked Fenrir’s way when the wolf barked at him. “Uh, yeah. And yeah. And also yeah.” The cook untangled one of his hands to scratch behind his ear, the look of anxiety on his face melting into something more relaxed. At least marginally. “I don’t see us constantly toiling about during the slower days out at sea. And on the busier days, I’ll just skip out on the fishing in favor of the higher priority things. Are… are you okay?” The look Nihoff had was something Kaelem had seen in the diner a few times, mainly in people deep, deep in thought.

Swan's response induced an involuntary, short laugh. "Well, to each their own I guess." Sura replied jokingly.
He hadn't expected a to meet someone who had such a reason to join the Marines, perhaps it lacked depth in Sura's opinion. This made him wonder if Swan was hiding his true reason and was just kidding.

"See ya later man, it was nice meeting you."

With a quick, short flick of the wrist, Sura waves Swan goodbye. He proceeds to walk around the ship observing things around just to pass time until he gets called. He walks up to the helm and gently grabs a handle with one hand as he reminisces about his time as a helmsman. He continues walking around touching other surfaces on the ship. As a kid he used to have a hobby, besides learning about the Sea or practicing Martial Arts, he would also indulge in carpentering. As a matter of fact, among the luggage he had brought with himself was a set of wooden pieces that, once assembled, make up a wooden dummy used for practicing his Martial Arts techniques.
