Regular Mafia: Role Guide [For Players & Hosts]
This role guide is not exhaustive or complete, but it gives you (the players and hosts) an idea of what sort of roles you can expect in Regular Mafia, and to what extent these roles can be modified. Hosts may use this guide as a base to create their roles, and players can use this to just understand what they'll be facing in-game.


GENERAL ROLE TERMS


Offensive: These roles can damage/hurt/kill other roles in games.
- X Life attacks / limited harming roles
- Powerful harming roles (multiple life attacks/unstoppable attacks)

Defensive: These roles can protect/shield other roles (or self) in games.
- Role blockers (limited action or full role blocking)
- Protectors (kill only or all harmful action protects)
- Target changers (redirects, complete control, manipulation)

Investigative: These roles can investigate other roles in games.
- Full role investigators
- Flavor investigators
- Action based investigators
- Spies

Support: These roles can provide support to other roles in games.
- Revives
- Lynch vote manipulation (multiply or negate)
- Enhancers

Chaos: These roles can cause chaos in games.
- Chaos investigative
- Chaos supportive
- Millers/Third Party
- Serial Killers/Kill-All's
- Manipulators

Sleeper/Changer: These roles can change alignment based on restrictions in their roles.
- Flavor based/story based swapping roles
- Timed based swapping roles

Immunity: Protection from certain game mechanics/roles/actions.

The dangerous goons that threaten innocent lives. In Regular mafia where flavor is given a lot of importance, Mafia is commonly the antagonist of the flavor/theme the game is based on. Hosts may also mix-and-match abilities to create more powerful roles, as Regular mafia gives hosts complete freedom in role creations.

Mafia Leader
He'll ice you personally... or better yet get you iced. He's the most fearful baddie on the street, children cry when they hear his name and those who are smart know better than to confront him. The mafia leader may possess the following abilities (depending on host set up):


1. Powerful offensive actions (bypassing protects etc.)
2. Redirection actions
3. Night immunity
4. Lynch immunity
5. Investigative immunity
6. Multiple lives
7. Day lynch manipulation
8. Write-up manipulation

Mafia Killer
He's the right hand man of the boss, the guy who takes care of eliminating threats to his boss or getting him coffee, does it all loyally. The mafioso may possess the following abilities (depending on host set up):


1. Offensive actions (which can be stopped/protected against)
2. Limited lynch immunity
3. Multiple lives

Mafia Redirector
Whatcha looking at, boy? This mean baddie will not let you do as you wish... he won't take away your gun, he'll just make you point it at someone else. The redirector may possess the following abilities (depending on host set up):


1. Redirect actions from player A to player B
2. Redirect incoming actions on Player A to player B
3. Redirection of incoming actions on self to others
4. Redirecting day lynch to target of choice
5. Redirecting multiple players/actions

Mafia Chaos
He knows no restrain, a mass murderer... someone who finds joy when others cry... even the boss thinks that something is wrong with this fella. The chaos role may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):


1. Kill everyone who approaches them in the night
2. Kill everyone who votes to lynch them during the day
3. Change town roles or plant fake evidence on town members to confuse detectives
4. Show up as third party instead of mafia in investigations
5. Suicide to protect other Mafia members

Mafia Defensive

Mafia Blocker
Ruthless, just ruthless. He stomps you out of the way, or brings a bulldozer to crush your house. He's willing to do no matter what it takes to keep you away from his buddies. The mafa roleblocker may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

1. Block single/multiple actions
2. Block entire role from performing any action
3. Convert others to vanilla (no action) roles for limited amount of time
4. Limited night immunity
5. Limited lynch immunity

Mafia Protector
He won't let you lay a finger on the boss, or any of his pals. He'll give up his life if he has to, that's how dedicated he is. The mafia protector may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

1. Protect single/multiple allies from harmful actions during the night phase
2. Act as a protective agent for the godfather, who will be invincible until the protector is killed

Mafia Healer
She graciously walks down the streets, charming her foes and buying time for her allies to retreat. Don't be fooled by her pretty looks, she's a deadly killer. The mafia healer may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):


1. Heal allies who are injured
2. Revive dead allies
3. Add additional lives to allies

Mafia Support

Mafia Manipulator
He's educated, smart, and prefers using words over bullets. He uses his skills to manipulate the innocent and protect the evil. The mafia manipulator may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

2. Manipulate investigative results of other roles
3. Manipulate day lynch votes

Mafia Investigator
She's the master of stealth and darkness is her best friend. She fears not her enemies for she becomes one of them, information she gathers is invaluable to her allies. The mafia investigator may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

3. Investigate character/flavor of other roles

Mafia Enhancer
He's an expert in the fields of drugs, never did study medicine but no one in the Mafia cares about your degree. His job, strengthen the foot soldiers in any way possible. The mafia enhancer may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

1. Enhance allies offensive and defensive capabilities
2. Ability to let allies use multiple actions during the night
3. Provide limited unstoppable perks to allies actions

Town in Regular are in majority of cases the good guys. Their roles are weaker than those of Mafia and Neutral but they make it up with numbers. While Mafia has many abilities that help them to kill people Town has abilities that help them investigate and protect their numbers. Town has various types of role which you can use to make roles or combine them into a single role.

Town Offensive

Town Leader ( Jack of all Trades )
Forces or Town aren't without their own firepower. They have roles dedicate to removing scum from their community. As such they need a leader who will lead them. Town leader is the strongest role that in most cases is Jack of All Trades , ready to provide assistance in any way he can. The town leader may possess the following abilities (depending on host set up):


1. Powerful offensive actions (bypassing protects etc.)
2. Powerful defensive actions ( full protects etc.)
3. Powerful support actions ( role blocking , role crush etc.)
4. Investigation ( Ability/Alignment/WU investigation etc.)

Town Killer (Vigilante)
Right hand of justice , Vigilante is there to enact justice on those who harm Town. He is primarily attacking role with little to no defensive/support abilities. The vigilante may possess the following abilities (depending on host set up):


1. Offensive actions (which can be stopped/protected against)
2. Offensive buffs ( increased damage etc.)
3. Multiple lives

Town Brute(Veteran)
Even the light has its own speck of dark. As such Town has its wild card , the Brute. He may not be the friendlier of the bunch but he servers the Justice. The brute role may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):


1. Attack everyone who approaches them in the night
2. Attack everyone who votes to lynch them during the day
3. Attack everyone who visit your target
4. Suicide to protect other Town members

Town Defensive

Town Blocker
It is often said that it is better to prevent something rather than cure it. Without hesitation blockers stop scum before they even get a chance to hurt someone. The Town role blocker may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

1. Block single/multiple actions
2. Block entire role from performing any action
3. Rolecrush

Town Protector
Unlike his buddy blocker town protector is there to save someone by putting his life on line. Selfless act indeed. The Town Protector may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

1. Protect single/multiple allies from harmful actions during the night phase
2. Act as a protective agent for the Town Leader, who will be invincible until the protector is killed

Town Healer
As the last line of defense Town Healer posses an unique set of healing abilities. One could argue that a good healer is valuable as a whole team itself. The Town Healer may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):


1. Heal allies who are injured

Town Support

Town Transporter
Hold on right there buddy. Transporter has 1 primary role - disrupt mafia as much as you can. Switch targets and watch them attack wrong people, maybe even their comrades. The transporter may possess the following abilities (depending on host set up):


1. Redirect actions from player A to player B
2. Redirect incoming actions on Player A to player B
3. Redirection of incoming actions on self to others
4. Redirecting multiple players/actions

Town Investigator
Information is power. Town Investigator has a role of providing Town necessary information they need to catch scum. The Town Investigator may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

1. Investigate affiliation of other roles

4. Investigate abilities of other roles

Town Enhancer
One doesn't need to become stronger by himself ,he can always hope that a friendly enhancer will be there to boost them. The Town Enhancer may possess the following abilities (depending on the host set up):

1. Enhance allies offensive and defensive capabilities
2. Ability to let allies use multiple actions during the night
3. Provide limited unstoppable perks to allies actions

While town and mafia have their battles there is another force on the rise. Silent Wolves or Thriller Bark have their own agendas and desires. Their power is much stronger than that off town and mafia roles but they don't have the benefit of having a team with them.

Neutral can have any abilities town and mafia have. Important thing to remember is that neutrals are often the most powerful roles in the game


Neutrals can be divided into several categories

Neutral Good
A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order.

Lawful Neutral
A lawful neutral character acts as law, tradition, or a personal code directs her. Order and organization are paramount to her. She may believe in personal order and live by a code or standard, or she may believe in order for all and favor a strong, organized government.

True Neutral
A neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. She doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality.

Chaotic Neutral
A chaotic neutral character follows his whims. He is an individualist first and last. He avoids authority, resents restrictions, and challenges traditions. A chaotic neutral character may be unpredictable, but his behavior is not totally random. He is not as likely to jump off a bridge as to cross it.

Neutral Evil
A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, whether for profit, sport, or convenience. She has no love of order and holds no illusion that following laws, traditions, or codes would make her any better or more noble.

Regular Mafia: Set Up Guide
This guide serves as a benchmark to help hosts and players understand how to create and understand set ups for games. It is not perfect guide nor mandatory one , it only serves to inform players.

When making a set up for Regular Games everything starts from the theme you will use to make the game. Theme is the bread an butter of your set up. Richer the theme you can use the more options you can make when it comes to set up.

Next thing you should decide is what kind of set up you wanna make.
Most popular set ups are:

  1. Normal - This is vanilla one , Town versus Mafia with 3rd party being there to influence the game in its own way
  2. Kingmaker - This set up is similar to the normal one with 1 major difference. Game has a King and King decides on the lynch. King doesn't need to be Town , he can be Mafia or Neutral King depending how you set it up.
  3. Captains - This set up revolves around Town and Mafia having captains - leaders who are in most cases outside their team but heavily help them.
  4. Factions - This game doesn't have Town or Mafia but instead has many different factions which need to achieve their win condition
  5. Free For All - Unlike Factions this game made is every man for himself. No teams , just you and your role.
There are more set ups , these are just here to showcase what can be done.

Once you picked the theme and the type of set up next thing to do is divide the characters in the appropriate roles. Stay true to the theme. Don't make characters something they aren't. The better you divide them the better game will be.

That is the core of every Regular set up. Once you set that up you can work on side things you can place in your game. Do you wanna add Events? Quests? Shop? Locations? Feel free to, it will only make your game feel more alive.
