Or maybe is that I haven't played in a while and this seems as much? If I recall correctly when I used to play we just said hello in the first-day phase everything else was spam post ? is more fun this way thought!

It's not the day phase just yet. It's the evening phase where ppl can casually talk with each other and fluff. A lot of us still use it to scum hunt as to not waste it.
