The Hunt #9 @Guren

Jason was walking up the path when he heard the voices speak inside. He stopped, pretending to inspect his surroundings, even the house, but never lingering on any specifics, in case he was being watched. He felt several presences inside the house, and one of them spoke, revealing herself to be Juliet. A couple older men also spoke, telling the story of what had happened here. Parts of it at least, what they knew. It was clear they didn’t have all the information.

Juliet raised an eyebrow at the old man as he referred to her as a young girl, but said nothing. To someone his age there was likely no difference, and she was more focused on the information that they presented. The soldier seemed to be in a terrible mood, but the man named Rodrick was friendly and forthcoming.

He told a story of greedy pirates searching for treasure, of the changes that occurred when they found said treasure. How everything had gone wrong since then, how the pirates had gained strange powers and betrayed one another. Where they remained and the dire situation that they found themselves in.

How come you here are not affected? Juliet asked once the man was done speaking, having thought the same thing since she stepped inside the building. You say the other people of Shutter Island are mindlessly roaming the island, and I can attest to this, I saw it first hand. What I don’t understand is how you have been spared. Have you hid here all along?

But yes, we are here to capture these pirates. Perhaps if we take them away, it will lift the curse, if not we can warn HQ and they can possibly send help.
Juliet said, moving towards the door again. Is there anything else before I go?

Jason, who was still standing outside, suddenly sensed something back from where he had come, where Merrimack lay still. However, when he turned around he saw nothing, and the rubble that the mink was hidden underneath seemed undisturbed. Still, he kept his eye on the location for a little longer, in case something else were to happen. If Merrimack was anything to go by, the other members of the pirate crew should not be able to move faster than his vision could react to.

Juliet raised a good question which was met with a bit of pause from everyone in the room. Clearly, they had given thought to this question themselves. And the only response Rodrick could come up with was a deep sigh. "We genuinely don't know. We've asked that question ourselves multiple times. But there isn't a single solid factor that connects us. We were in different places, different backgrounds and aren't related by any means."

"My own suspicion is that none of us present were interested in the treasure. But that's just a gut feeling."
Paul, the clerk interjected. A weak argument considering the circumstances: but curses are an odd thing, who can say how they work? Juliet afterwards went over the facts and some possible solutions before closing out her thoughts.

"No beyond their general locations we haven't tried to venture further. Piere's injuries are because he fought Nicholas, he's different than when he arrived here."
"Stronger, darker as if controlled,"
Paul added.

"Be careful miss, and good luck."

Rodrick said his goodbyes and hopefully not farewell. Outside Jason stood guard observing the location he dropped Merrimack with keen eyes. But nothing else would happen as the area was pretty quiet, the horde marched on endlessly along the coast of the island. Eventually, they'd return to the village but given their pace that'd take an hour at the very least. With the directions Rodrick gave the next objective was to straight up the path leading to mansions and a church.

Juliet nodded as she took in the words, looking out into the empty air in the room, her hand resting on the door handle. She said nothing until the others were done talking, instead weighing the information in her mind. Even as the villagers quieted down, she stood there for a moment, lost in her own thoughts. Then she seemed to snap out of her own mind and looked back to the people in the room.

Thank you. She said with a smile on her face, despite the circumstances. It was a tense gesture, but she put up the facade nonetheless. And hopefully we’ll see each other again soon.

She pushed the door open, stepping out from the house into the light of the day. Jason didn’t turn as she approached, instead he turned to look up the path ahead. Juliet opened her mouth to speak, to tell him what she had learned, but he simply motioned for her to follow, then walked up the path where supposedly Bob was waiting.

I was listening in, let’s go. Jason said, only so loud that she would hear. Juliet paused for a moment, then nodded and followed. Good job.

Juliet was surprised, but it was the lesser of her emotions, which she kept in check at the moment. Both of them strode up the hill ahead of them, eyes peeled for any surprises that may come before them. Forgoing all pretense, Juliet pulled her gun out and held it before herself in preparation for any sudden attacks.

The fewer words exchanged the better, that seemed to be Jason's way of working. For now at the very least. With both him and Juliet back together they moved up towards the path. It was a short trek and it didn't take long for the difference between this district and the lower one to sink in. It was in volume at least a lot smaller but the decadence was a lot higher, with houses that were twice the size of those below. A separation of class was at work here at one point in time. But for now, this district equally housed nearly no one, did these people also venture off as a mindless horde? Or were they already a part of the horde they came across? Eventually, their walk would come to an end before the church which supposedly would hold Bob, their second target.

The large gate that led towards the entrance would suddenly start to shake, trembling even as if it couldn't contain that which was behind it anymore. Eventually, the same gate would burst open releasing a literal wave of gold coins that was about to crash on top of Jason and Juliet. Above this wave, Bob was literally surfing it and seemingly guiding it towards our Cipher Pol agents.

2. Small Building Level

"Fuck it, Nicolas, I'll fight you over it once we've dealt with these pests. What do you say? The Ancient coin is ours, its existence and even its fight over it."

"Finally, you're making some sense here. Not that you'll be able to defeat me. Not now that I have Merrimack's piece."

The two remaining Greed Pirates have finally revealed themselves. And compared to Merrimack they were making some sense at the very least they were intelligible. Standing on this sea of gold pieces they held a casual conversation with one another.

"Thanks for keeping it warm, sir," Nicolas said, moving the coin upwards as if he were presenting a toast towards Jason.

The final battle came faster than perhaps Jason and Juliet expected. But there was more mystery to uncover here. One major factor was that Nicolas's power was at the same level as the agent himself. Bob was at a level comparable to Merrimack if a nudge better. From the mayor's tale, these 3 were supposed to be equals.

Had he lied to them?

As they walked through the settlement, Jason and Juliet took in the sight of the scene. They noticed that the buildings up here looked more impressive and expensive than their counterparts below, but neither one of them were surprised by this. Most places both of them had visited had varying levels of wealth, a divide in the classes. That was an entirely different beast than the one they were here to deal with, and also one they were in charge of upholding.

Further down their walk, they approached the church, which seemed to be encased in a tall wall for some reason. A grand gate, to keep people in or out? Probably the latter. Was it new or old? Hard to tell. What was obvious however was that something was wrong. The entire portal had started to shake and the agents that had been approaching now stopped in their tracks, vary of what was happening.

Then the gate burst open, unleashing the flood of wealth on the town. And the agents. Grabbing Juliet by her collar, Jason jumped off of the ground. Kicking further, he stepped into the air and over the wave of gold coins, allowing them to pass under.

Only started slightly by his actions, Juliet aimed her gun as she reached the zenith of her flight, and the two strangers finished their words, shooting a single bullet towards the head of Bob. She was not about to let them catch their breath. And neither was Jason.

Although he sensed the strength of Nicolas, and the fact it was equal to that of his own, not his fellow officers, Jason figured there was some trickery afoot. Time to see if he could pull back the curtain. And so, while still holding Juliet by the scruff of her neck mid air, he swung his leg. From the tip of his foot a wide arc of air shot forth, cutting its way towards Nicolas, aiming to sever him in half across his torso.

With a swift reaction on Jason's part, the two agents managed to avoid the wave of literal gold coins. This sea of gold would eventually settle below them but this would not deter the two as they quickly upped the pressure. First up was Juliet who fired a single round from within her fire-arm straight towards Bob. Second was Jason himself who released a rankyaku straight towards Nicholas, the air blade cutting its path towards the Greed Pirate's captain.

First up was Bob, the somewhat aggravated man who gave Juliet a side eye as he made a singular wave with his left hand. Prompting the gold below his feet to mimic the gesture. The sheer amount of these coins and material, however, made a decent shield for the attack Juliet had released. And with the same movement, the gold lowered itself again but the true purpose of it was so he could draw the revolver at his hip. With a quick rotation around his finger, Bob would steady his gun, his right hand ready on the hammer of the piece itself.

"High noon!" The man called, slamming the trigger and the hammer numerous times. Unloading the entire cylinder with 'one' click of the trigger.
1. Wall/Tree Level +2(B) = 4. City Block Level

At the same time a barrage of bullets was heading towards Jason's partner, Nicholas would stand eye to eye with a rankyaku. The captain would not move from his position and instead threw a quick jab in front of him. But from that quick jab, the displacement of air was so impressive that he effectively fired a bullet of air towards the projectile. Moon shaped vs fist shaped the two attacks would meet each other in the middle.

81-100: 3. Large Building Level +1(c) =4. City Block Level
Equal DPR: Attacks cancel each other out, though the area around the clash may still take damage.

The two attacks would collide and detonate one another but causing no real victor besides that. The coins around the impact scattered far and wide around the battlefield but didn't make any real change in the seemingly massive pile of coins. What was certain was Nicholas's incredible strength, far greater than what earlier intel or reporting would have suggested.

"Bold, turning this into a one vs one," Nicholas said, putting his arms back in front of him. Not moving an inch from his location.

In answer to the agent's assault, the pirate known as Bob unloaded a barrage of gunshots aimed at the junior agent. Knowing that Juliet, who was still mid air, was exposed to such attacks Jason decided to act. Kicking the air, he pulled Juliet out of the path of the bullets, then swung her around towards the ground below. The woman let out a yelp as she was thrown aside, but landed with great dexterity on the ground below. Immediately she kicked off the ground, running towards Bob with her pistol in her hand, hoping to bait out a reaction from him.

Using the weight of Juliet, Jason threw himself through the air as well, then started moving rapidly and erratically. Using the technique known as Kamisori, he combined geppo and soru to move himself forward with great speed and precision. With this he approached Nicholas in an eyeblink, his right fist already clenched and arm cocked. With a quick thrust, he threw a strong punch directly towards the center of the pirate's chest, hoping to deal some significant damage.

The agent duo clearly had a lot of experience working together. Or it seemed so at the very least. Jason immediately upon realizing her disadvantage in the air moved up and pulled her out of the path of the bullets. Using the same movement to turn around and swing her down to the ground. Juliet clearly not expecting this let out a sharp cry but repositioned herself in but a few moments. She rushed towards Bob with her pistol in hand. "Not bad kid," Bob said, the cylinder out in the open as he quickly filled it through a cartridge. The revolver reloaded in but a single second. With the firearm in his right hand, Bob aimed once more and fired two short rounds towards Juliet. One towards her leg and another towards her shoulder, each round opposite of the other. One towards her right leg and another towards her left shoulder, to be more specific. Side-stepping would see her getting hit on the opposite end if she wasn't careful.

On the other side of things, Jason closed the distance between him and Nicholas in the blink of an eye. The captain of the greed pirates was clearly taken by surprise by this act. He could follow to a certain extent but interrupting Jason was another thing altogether. The agent too would notice that Nicholas could react to this movement, a surprise to say the least. With his arms in a crossed position, Nicholas attempted to block the strike towards his torso.
61-80: 4. City Block Level
= Normal damage
Nicholas took the attack head-on and was sent flying. But Jason could feel it from the strike that he hadn't hit his opponent with the force that he wanted to. For some reason, the captain of the Greed Pirates was a lot tougher and held a lot more bulk than he should have. Thrown backwards, Nicholas found himself back in the church for a very short moment. It was only a second or two before the man immediately moved himself back on the literal path of gold that filled these streets. But in those two seconds Jason with his mantra would notice a short fluctuation in the man's power. The short moment he was in the church he got a nudge weaker, not by much but easily detectable to a mantra user.

"Not a bad punch," Nicholas said, twisting his arm. As if to warm himself up.

Juliet watched as Bob raised his gun toward her and paid close attention to where the barrel pointed. As he shot, as did she, two bullets aimed towards the man's torso, one for the abdomen, the other towards the chest. The main goal here was not to injure her opponent, though she would gladly accept that outcome. No, the aim was to make him have to dodge, just as she did.

As both of them fired simultaneously, Juliet threw herself forwards. Her legs lifted off the ground, pulling them above one of the shots, while her momentum carried her forward and under the other shot. As the two bullets flew past her body Juliet landed in a roll and got up, trying to continue her rush towards the pirate.

Jason felt a great satisfaction when his punch connected with the pirate. These were people he had no qualms about attacking, and would not feel a great loss if they died. Sure, it would mean the mission would be a failure, but these were scum. They had brought nothing but suffering to this place, and although there was clearly something else at play here, these were not pirates that children looked up to.

His thoughts were cut short as Nicholas' aura seemed to falter as he crashed into the church. Was it something to do with the building? Was it the disconnect from the coins? Something else entirely? Well, Jason wasn't about to let his opponent sneak away. So even as the pirate was making his way out of the church, Jason was rushing forward.

As Nicholas was exiting through the doorway to the church, Jason was there to meet him. If he paid attention to it, it might seem like the agent had crossed the coins, his steps even disturbing the metal discs beneath his feet. Alas, it was only the air pressure of his geppo that carried him forwards. He had chosen to do this as in the heat of the moment, maybe it would fool the pirate to use the coins to throw him off his footing, something that would likely have no effect on his attack.

And that was the main thing that Nicholas had to worry about. Just as before, Jason was before the pirate, his fist thrust like a blunt weapon towards the center of his foe's torso. Unlike last time however, the agent's very willpower guided the attack, strengthening his attack power even more than before.

"Not a bad punch,"
Thank you.

Juliet quickly returned Bob's gunfire with two rounds of her own. One for his torso and another one for the abdomen. All in the hopes that he'd move to avoid the attack. Leaping in between the bullets Julliet through extraordinary feat of agility and reflexes managed to do just that. And at the same time, Bob avoided the attack on his merit. But with a simple high hop, pulling his knees close to his chest. All to make sure the projectiles would fall below him. With Juliet still rushing towards him the man quickly took out his gun once again and aimed straight towards her, again a double click to fire off yet another 2 rounds. Given the angle and distance, these would naturally reach her upper body, shoulders, in particular, this time.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the battle, Jason kept up the pressure. Meeting his opponent by the time he was leaving the church. A few key details Nicholas immediately spotted was the air being displayed below his feet. The thought of Geppo being used echoed through the pirate's mind. Whatever idea he had would no longer work, if he had the power at his disposal at the very least. Next was Jason's follow-up punch who found the Greed Pirate's captain was quick on the uptake. Meeting the agent's punch right in the middle, causing a large crash down in the middle. The powers at be could no longer contain it and the forces expelled outwards rapidly.
81-100: 3. Large Building Level +2(B) = 5. Town Level
"That stung a little bit, holding some in reserve are we?" Nicholas said, hinting at the fact that he was oblivious to haki. This is a surprising fact given the origins of these pirates. Haki was only common in the new world after all.

Without as much as a warning, Nicholas would move his fist into a grab around Jason's wrist and pull him towards him. The agent, if caught by this move, would find himself flying towards a very strong and forceful shoulder check. The captain even leaned in at the last possible second to inflict more damage and possibly blast the man backwards a few feet.
81-100: 3. Large Building Level +2(B) = 5. Town Level

Whatever happened to that slight aura dip seemed to have recovered itself. The origin was right before his eyes at least. The man had only put it together.

Juliet was surprised to see her foe so casually dodge her counterattack, yet what caught her off guard as she rose from her roll was him firing yet another barrage. Even as she got back on her feet, she pushed herself to the side, yet it would not be quick enough. She had underestimated her opponent, and at the last possible second her body tensed up, falling aside like a statue on the ground. Two bullets crashed into her body, but her tekkai defended against the brunt of the force. Still, as the effects of her hardened flesh passed she cried out in ago, her arm and chest severely bruised and bleeding. Stumbling to her feet, she faced Bob as he landed, groaning in her agony. Her left arm still curled in pain, she raised her gun again and fired towards the pirate as his feet touched down, hoping to catch him off guard, one bullet towards his chest, the other towards his abdomen.

Jason seemed to have hit a wall as well, his attacks cancelled out by his foe. Something clearly was wrong here, as his foe showed force far beyond what should be expected. He matched the agent casually, with simple attacks and no use of haki. In a rush of movement Nicholas moved forward, grabbing Jason by his wrist, pulling him through the air. Realizing he was in a very dangerous situation, Jason only knew of one way to deal with this, and so he became a leaf on the wind.

His body became light as a feather, twisting through the air as he was pulled by the pirate, then curled around his foe's shoulder to avoid the attack.

Kami-E. Jason muttered beneath his breath as he flowed past the strike, dodging what he could not have defended against head on, only canceled out like his foe had before. Now however, in the air just above the shoulder that had aimed to crush into him, Jason's arm grew into its full form once more, his index finger striking down with full force towards the joint in Nicholas' shoulder, aiming to at least wound the arm.

Juliet her tekkai saved her from what could've been lethal damage. Her arm and chest had sustained quite a bit of damage but that wouldn't deter her from biting through it all. Drawing from her pain she'd raise her arm once more and fired another round of two bullets towards Bob. The man widened his eyes as he equally underestimated the young woman, he hadn't thought her resilience was at that level. His gun desperately needed a reload and with his body moving downwards, evasive manoeuvres weren't an option. The man quickly aimed his open left hand to the side as a yellow gleam flew through his eyes, snapping several gold pieces to his side at speeds akin to a bullet.

Julliet's attacks would hit Bob but unfortunately not pierce the desired targets. They did, however, blast him back for a couple of meters. Skidding through the path of gold and onto the streets once more. Placing his left hand onto the ground, the man would finally come to a stop. Several gold pieces dropped to the ground, smoke rising from them as they had been folded. The man stood up, showing dark blue bruises at the point of impact. His vitals weren't pierced but he had taken damage as well. Another gleam took his eyes as yet another portion of goldpile flew towards him. "Not bad miss, not bad. But Shutter Island's treasure has cursed us. The irresistible desire for gold and greed that we cannot escape. We are forever linked to wealth. An ability without the drawback of being unable to swim." Bob said, revealing a piece of the puzzle. And with another wave of his left hand, 5 coins shot out like bullets towards Juliet, aiming to overwhelm her. "Remarkable isn't it?" He said as the coins flew, using their distraction as a means to reload.
81-100: 3. Large Building Level

On the opposite side of the battle, Jason was equally perplexed by his opponent's combat ability. But it also did not deter the agent. At the very last moment using Kami-e to move himself around his opponent, evading Nicholas's shoulder charge. Rendering it mute and without any real impact. Up in the air, Jason repositioned himself and pushed down, extending his index finger and deploying his shin with maximum output. Nicholas saw the movement and tried his hardest to reposition himself but the fact remained that the man was a bit too slow in that regard. Having no real option than to lean on his left leg and leap out of the way, that same leap would eventually turn into a roll back onto his feet. But within that leap Jason would at last feel contact as his finger would hit the ground, cracking it and pushing the nearby gold all over the vicinity. Scattering it throughout the large church.
DPR 1 higher than dura: quite effective

"Fuck" Nicholas said, as he stumbled to his feet. Blood flowing down his right arm. Through his dodge, he had turned the pierce into a slice a decent cut was now upon the man's shoulder. Anger steered his actions as the man cocked back his left arm and shot open his hand into a claw-like stance. "Wolf Cannon!" The captain shouted as he dragged his left arm forward, using the motion to launch an air bomb towards the Agent.
61-80: 2. Small Building Level +2(B) = 101-119: 4. City Block Level
The air bomb flew forward towards the agent with again power beyond the man's normal being. But for some reason, it was weaker this time. If he had time to observe he'd note that a portion of the gold that was in the church had decreased. By his own doing but also because of Juliet's fight. The secret to this man's ability would be as clear as day now.

As her foe was struck by her bullets, Juliet took the opportunity to reload her own gun, as it too would be empty by now. As her foe reached out for a handful of coins she dropped the empty magazine on the ground, fishing out a new one and slamming it in place. Her skill wasn't so much that she could shoot the coins out of the air yet, so instead the moment the magazine locked in place she threw herself aside again, out of the way. Cursing herself, since she felt she was getting nowhere. Though this seemed to be the case for Jason too.

As the gold coins whipped past, one of them clipping her side and spraying blood through the air and across the ground, Juliet aimed her gun and release three more bullets towards her foe. She hoped she could hold out long enough, but for now she needed some safety. She came up from her roll around the corner of the stone wall, finally not fully out in the open. Sitting still, she listened for any movements from Bob.

Jason's attack finger came back red, blood dripping from its tip as Nicholas landed a short distance away, blood flowing from his shoulder. This was a battle like none he had been part of before. It was like Bob said, they were like devil fruit users without any drawbacks. Or were they? His opponent seemed to be weakening. Would it be a battle of attrition, or could something else be done?

Money really is the world to you all. Jason said as Nicholas launched another attack, weaker than before. It would seem to the pirate that the agent was caught in the blast, but a split second before impact Jason tapped his feet on the ground. Then he seemed to disappear. Perhaps the pirate would think he was struck by the blast, perhaps not.

Jason moved at breakneck speed, using Soru, first moving out of the way of the blast. Then, moving across the floor he made sure to kick the coins as he stepped over them. From Nicholas' perspective he would see his golden hoard fly in all directions, spreading out thinly and away from him.

Then, a moment later Jason emerged from Soru behind the pirate. Hand clenched, he aimed a jugon towards the right shoulder blade of Nicholas, aiming to cripple his other arm and send him flying.

The fighting between the two pirates and agents continued. Juliet currently on the backfoot did what she could to try and keep up. Through Bob's gesture, Juliet retaliated with several gunshots of her own, forcing him to weave and take a few steps away. But naturally, the man wasn't fast enough and the young agent her attacks grazed and pierced his skin in their targeted locations. It was somewhat effective but not to the degree to stop Bob. But it was odd and peculiar in the few exchanges before he had dodged her attacks with ease and this time he was sluggish and seemed to be forced to tank her hits. Was this ability without a drawback a hoax? Or was it simply so that in their grandeur they didn't notice that any kind of superhuman power came with weaknesses?

Juliet, hidden behind some stone noticed how Bob had lost track of her. To eliminate and weed out any possible hiding spots the man was forcing down any kind of wall structure. Pockets of concentrated golden coins were being launched towards it, breaking stone and cobble upon a single touch. Its force was nothing short of amazing but for now, Juliet had gotten her moment of reprieve.

Meanwhile, Jason had his troubles and worries to deal with but unlike Juliet, he had already seen through a serious part of this strange power. Jason before letting out a quip would move a max acceleration, soru having been used the agent flew straight towards and behind Nicholas. Throughout his path towards his opponent, Jason made sure to push any kind of coin or stack of them far removed from Nicholas. Again this act made Nicholas's power fluctuate. But he was still capable of following Jason albeit barely.
3. Large Building Level vs 6 City Level
True damage = 101-119: 4. City Block Level(quite effective)
The pirate captain turned as he latched out a ditch-effort punch. But sadly the man was too late for any kind of build-up or powerful counterattack. He had to make do with what he could. Fist against fist the two warriors collided but in that same instant the power dynamic was as clear as day. Nicholas' fist fractured in several spots as if he had punched a solid slab of metal. "FUCK!" The captain cried out as he was pushed back due to the force of recoil. With his fist throbbing, the man held it with his left hand, and at last, he felt cornered. "Impossible. Inconceivable. I need more. MORE!" The captain shouted as a red tint appeared around his body and his eyes, around his neck two pieces of a single gold coin floated. Jason would spot one of them being the same gold coin he found on Merrimack's body. The two coins for whatever reason clicked together.

Whatever this meant was uncertain but one thing was. The amount of power Nicholas was building would not be sustained for very long. Sweat was pouring from his face and the gold lingering around was turning into dust. In the end, the church was empty and Nicholas was at full power.

HUFF......."THIS IS THE END FOR YOU" HUFF.....

Nicholas said, strangely waiting to attack. But the man's limit was very much near. A sacrifice had been made but what exactly would only be known in the following quick exchanges?
