Oi,
I feel kinda basic bit** to explain this one but it hasn't been properly explained on this site yet. We progressed so far into the story(especially with the recent Oden flash back & the Pirate King's journey) that there is rarely any doubt to what it is. This is a good starting point by which we can find out other bigger mysteries and speculate further. Though, those are for another day. So, without further a do, let's go!
Meaning of the D
The name of Luffy is the key in understanding the meaning of the D. The misconception lies in it being a letter and not a symbol.
Monkey D. "Straw Hat" Luffy (Japanese: モンキー・D・ルフ
This is due to a bad translations into English that abbreviates the name as "D." that is in fact incorrect. It is a "D" missing the "." proving its not an initial of the middle name. It is a symbol and why the followers of the "D" chose that symbol makes perfect sense if we know what they wanted or believed in.
This is what the "will of D" literally is.
"Inherited will,
the destiny of an age &
the dreams of its people
As long as people pursue the meaning of freedom, these things will never cease to be."
There belief is it that as long as people pursue the meaning of freedom, these 3 things will not be stopped. I think we are all in agreement that this is what the people who took in the symbol "D" in their name wanted, that is freedom. They came to the conclusion that is manifests itself in those 3 things and that the "D" represents what they in particular envisioned. Though why did they choose this symbol in particular and what does it mean? It is not a single reason why they chose "D" but who could have thought, 3 meanings? All those 3 meanings are corresponding with the 3 things that never cease to be, hence why the symbol of "D" was taken in the first place.
3 meanings - 1 symbol
There are 3 meanings in the symbol of the "D". The first is the straw hat.
This one I don't see a huge need to explain any more than showing this panel. It proves without a shred of doubt that the Straw Hats are connected to the Void Century.
The second one is more elusive but nonetheless undeniable.
The affiliation to smile even in the face of curtain death. This stems from an understanding and total belief that even though your mortality is going to fade you are certain that whatever you wanted to accomplish in life will be done. It also stems from the acceptance of death(which is a form of freedom) to fulfill dangerous and impossible dreams such as becoming the Pirate King.
The third meaning is basically confirmed since Zou but was even more reaffirmed in Oden's journey(no wonder Pedro's flashback was related to exactly this), the "dawn of the world".
Coincidentally, this meaning begins with a "D" which lead people to believe(including me) it is the definitive solution to the meaning of "D". Even though it doesn't even start with a "D" in Japanese. The reaching of a "new dawn" is what the people who carry that symbol envisioned during the Void Century. I won't go into too much detail here because that is for a later theory but there is a good reason why Roger "laughed" finding out about the tale of his "kinsmen". Joyboy invented the "D clan" after discovering the "true history" and him understanding that they don't live in the era that would fix whatever is wrong with the world. Them taking a symbol of joy like the "D"(grin, sunrise & Straw Hat) is indeed then funny because its purely based on a strong belief that the future generations will achieve a better tomorrow.
Combining meaning & text
3 meanings - Straw Hat, Dawn & the Grin
3 texts - Inherited will, the destiny of age & the dreams of its people
Not only does the "will of D" has its internal meaning and a unified symbol, they work in symbiosis and help to explain each others importance. For example, the grin that people have is when they follow their dreams(pursuing happiness) but at the same time is present when people die and their will is being passed on. The same is true for "owning" the age and so forth. The Straw Hat can be a meaning for the dreams of its people but at the same time Inherited will and especially the current age(age of the Straw Hats) and so on. You can get the whole spectrum of the meaning of the "D" within these confines. Or in other words the literal meaning of the "D" corresponds with the symbols of the "D" and hence why the symbol was chosen in the first place and why the Roger Pirates enjoyed this "Laugh Tale"(hence also where the naming comes from) so much.
Inherited will, (corresponds with Straw Hat, Dawn & Grin)
the destiny of age & (corresponds with Straw Hat, Dawn & Grin)
the dreams of its people (corresponds with Straw Hat, Dawn & Grin)
You might be thinking at this point, can really all this be drawn from the early chapters and did Oda really had this already set when he named Luffy? Fair question but I don't have to speculate here and just show you. Even though the textual meaning appeared first in chapter 100 the symbols that correspond with the "D" are all there. This is the title page of chapter 1.
You see the Straw Hat, Luffy's grin and in the title we find the "Dawn", bingo. It is all there from chapter 1 and Oda focused on these themes that he created to explain the mystery of the "D" by exploring an aspect of it like the "inherited will" on Drum Island and in particular Hiluluks flashback. You can go through the rest of the series and will find that this has been done to death and we are already primed to accept such a solution. The stage is more than set(overdone in my view, especially with the latest Oden flashback) and next time we are going into the Pirate King's journey and review some older ideas that got confirmed and where we can talk with much more accuracy about what is to come. I hope you enjoyed it.
Take care.
