Chapter 32: Grave Danger said:
Does this dragon look like Momo?! Coincidence? I think NOT!

Chapter 33: The Silent Man said:
This Chapter Title page is the first time we see the SH member’s Jolly Roger; Zoro & Nami’s! Check it out!

Chapter 82: Ok said:
I would love this framed. Love how this title panel was colored and styled.

Chapter 93: Coming Down said:
Look at this Garp scrub! Cut by Morgan! What a weakling!

Tony Tony Chopper Enters said:
Cover Story. Just odd. I didn’t know Jango had heart eyes! Lol.

Chapter 3: Pirate Hunter Zoro Enters said:
In this panel, Luffy hears about Zoro and contemplates asking him to join. However, he’s not sure, as Zoro is a criminal. Luffy needs to see whether Zoro is a good guy for himself.

Later on in chapter 3, by eating the girl’s disgusting rice balls, Luffy sees Zoro is a good person. You can see it in his face, he’s convinced Zoro will be his first nakama!

Chapter 4: Marine Captain Axe Hand Morgan said:
Love this panel! So funny! Luffy’s like: “yeah, you’re now my cremate”. Like, wut? Lmao.

Chapter 5: The Pirate King and the Great Sworsdman said:
Finally, a chapter later, Zoro agrees. Kind of funny how Zoro ends up being the most loyal to Luffy, but it took him literally the threat of death to join him. Zoro’s reluctance to be a pirate and “pirate hunter” moniker makes more sense now that Oda mentioned in SBS Zoro’s father was killed by pirates.

Chapter 8: Nami Enters said:
First meeting after Luffy is blasted out of the sky. Nami uses him to get away from Buggy Pirates. In doing so, she offers a partnership for treasure. Other than Robin, I believe Nami is the only other SH who asked to join, though for nefarious reasons.

Chapter 9: Evil Woman said:
In this panel, Luffy asks her to join after he said he did not want to team up with her. Luffy learned she was a navigator and quickly changed his mind!

Chapter 14: Reckless said:
After going back and forth, and with Orange Town in danger, Nami agreed to form an alliance. Unbeknown to Luffy, she still plans on stealing from them!

Chapter 94: The 2Nd said:
After Luffy defeats Arlong, that emotion was palpable. Nami officially joins, with tears in her face!

Chapter 41: To the Sea said:
In true Usopp fashion, Usopp is doh-ed into joining!

Chapter 140: Castle-Dwelling Snow said:
First time Chopper was asked to be in the crew was Nami, wanting to get a doctor so they could rush to Alabasta. Luffy was chasing Chopper to eat him!

Kureha then explains why Chopper initially said no. “Wounds not even a doctor can heal”. Chills.

Luffy then asks Chopper to join, not knowing he’s a doctor. Luffy just wanted a cool monster in his crew! Luffy’s a kid.

Chapter 148: Unbreakable said:
Chopper starts to come around to joining SHs in this panel. First time anyone had ever called him friend.

Chapter 152: Full Moon said:
Chopper still says no at the end. His heart is still broken, still unwilling to trust.

Luffy responds by telling him “Oh just shut up and come with us already!” Just his carefree nature and love. This made me smile.

Chapter 22 said:
Gammon was the first person Luffy invited to the crew but said no. Gammon decided to stay with his friends. Great feels!

Chapter 140: Castle-Dwelling Snow said:
Luffy just stays asking peeps to join his crew. Imagine if Kureha had joined!

Chapter 22 said:
Nami first explains the split of the ocean, setting the general idea for the world’s geography. It’s all about the Red Line!

Chapter 51: Roronoa Zoro Falls To The Sea said:
In insulting Zoro, Mihawk explains that the Grand Line separates the four seas.

Chapter 101: Reverse Mountain said:
Geographic galore! As I mentioned, the world building in this arc is great. That is what One Piece is best at: world-building.

Chapter 105: Log Pose said:
Nice explanation on how Log Poses work and the different routes. Following the journey of other pirates and other routes would be cool.

Chapter 113: It’s Allright said:
Mandatory One Piece Georgaphy for my collection! Iparapara looks so stupid!

Chapter 132: See? said:
Geography Tracking post! Vivi explains the types of islands in the seas.

Foosha Village
I felt good about re-reading Foosha Village, the beginning. While it’s only one chapter, I felt it aged well. Good combination of comedy, shock, and action. If we view it in the eyes of the intended audience, kids, it holds up. However, it woefully fails in comparison to some manga’s first chapter.

Best Character: Shanks, and it’s not even close.

Chapter 1: Romance Dawn: Dawn of the Adventure said:
I tried to figure out whether Oda planned the Nika DF. This panel shows Shank’s reaction to Luffy eating the fruit. Not sure I can infer he knew it was Nika DF. At this point, in East Blue, all Devil fruits were “rare” and a “treasure”.

Best Character: Shanks. Not even close.

I loved this panel! Shanks commending Luffy before he leaves, using foreshadowing. The comparison to himself is something I found cool upon re-reading.

Captain Alvida Arc
Aggressively mid. The arc was devoid of any real tension and risk. Seemed rushed. However, this is the first instance we get to see Luffy’s “power” to have people follow him. Coby immediately became Luffy’s friend, telling him his predicament and challenging Alvida. Captain Alvida was one-shotted.

Best Character: Coby. His emotional transformation was great.

Chapter 2: That Boy! The Straw Hat Wearing Luffy said:
Started from the bottom now we here! Cool to see Coby’s progression. Here he is being a little bi***. Fast forward to last few mangas, he’s clashing with Blackbeard. Amazing glow-up!

Panel below is the first time Zoro is mentioned. Love his evil grin!

Captain Morgan Arc
This was just fine. For some reason, I remembered Captain Morgan’s fall being more impactful. It was literally a one-hit from Zoro with ease, while Morgan was focusing on Luffy. This arc did not age well. The only saving grace was Zoro’s backstory, only in the backdrop of loving that character.

Best Character: Zoro, easily!

Chapter 5: The Pirate King Ans The Great Sworsdman said:
During Zoro’s backstory, I came across this gem. 2,000 loses. That’s insane! Makes more sense that Zoro continually says he won’t lose again, partly because he wants that memory of defeat to be only with Kuina. Beaut.

Chapter 6: The First Crewmember said:
This panel spoke to me. In their first meeting, Zoro declares that no one will interfere with his goal, threatening to kill Luffy if he interfered with his goal to become World’ Greatest Swordsman. Juxtapose that with Thriller Bark and Timeskip, in both instances Zoro puts Luffy in front of his dream. Very cool reading this back in that context. Truly, love between nakama.

Chapter 7: Friends said:
We all know after each arc, the Straw Hats celebrate by having a great feast and stuffing their faces. Below is the first time it happened! They’ve come a long way!

At the end of the arc, Luffy tells Coby they’ll always be friends! With these two at the helm of the Pirate and Marine forces, possibilities are endless! Great to re-read the bond they made. Look at that Coby face!

Buggy Pirates Arc
With the introduction of Buggy, a real contender, the story begins to pick up. Still aggressively mid in comparison to other arcs, but definitely exciting as it shows the show going in an upward arc. I personally feel that once we hit this arc, the upward trajectory keeps going until Marineford Arc. Buggy was funnier reading the manga this time around.

Best Character: Chochou. Mfer carried the arc. Panels galore of him in spoiler.

Chapter 8: Nami Enters said:
Our first look at Zoro’s bad sense of direction! Running gag win!

Chapter 10: The Incident At The Bar said:
Love this panel. Buggy-sama squaring up without a second’s thought! For whatever reason, I thought Buggy was shorter than Zoro till I re-read this panel.

Chapter 13: Treasure said:
Outside of Yu Yu Hakusho, One Piece is an anime that has made me cry. The first instance of which was Chouchou fighting for his master’s shop. Great scene. In this moment I knew One Piece was different from others, as it covered real emotion and psychology. Enjoy these panels!

Luffy got SSOOO pissed! This was the first time we see Luffy pissed and fighting with such passion. One-shoted Mohji and lion. Peep the ‘Don’ sound effect!

Finally, Chouchou is gifted the last bag. He walks away content. What a way to end it. As a bonus, it was the first time Nami saw Luffy doing something good. Nami began to trust Luffy, even though he was a pirate.

Chapter 16: Gong said:
This panel really bothered me, now knowing who Buggy is. How can you say you can claim all the treasure, when you know full well what the top tiers are, and that you’re nowhere near them! You saw Roger and WB clash in their prime! I’d say Oda had not thought of making Buggy an apprentice in Pirate King’s ship here.

Chapter 18: Buggy The Clown Pirate said:
Savage. Buggy just cuts Luffy‘s straw hat up. But again, raises another question. If he knew it was Shank’s hat, he would know it’s actually Roger’s hat. Say what you will about Buggy, he respected Roger. Out if character that he would desecrate his old captain’s hat like this. Again, leads to the inference Oda had not made the character decision yet of having Buggy/Shanks in Roger Pirates.

Chapter 20: A Thief’s Philosophy said:
This just ain’t right, Luffy. Even Nami knows it! Lmfao!

Top-Tier comedic ending! Miss these kind of things in the new chapters.

@Larsi Do you want to do one arc weekly together? :pandaawn:

Captain Kuro Arc
With the introduction of Kuro, a real villain, the fighting begins to pick up. Still aggressively mid in comparison to other arcs, but definitely is an improvement from other chapters just in the sheer fighting prowess. Overall, I loved Kuro. Great villain. I loved the story of Usopp and his lies, which the villagers end up growing fond of. Not the best, but it’s picking up!

Best Character: Captain Kuro. Finally we get a worthy and cool villain!

Chapter 23: Captain Usopp Enters! said:
Usopp’s first appearance! He looks so young! One thing that stood out to me is that his name means “Lie” + Name of Author of “Boy Who Cried Wolf”. Gold nugget!

Chapter 24: 800 Lies said:
This one made me a bit angry. When I was a kid, I didn’t care about Yasopp leaving his family to become a pirate. Now that I’m a Dad, this is so F-Ed up. Yasopp is just a selfish gunslinger. Thumbs down.

Chapter 33 The Silent Man said:
This was my favorite part, Kuro’s sheer ruthlessness. That’s something we didn’t see in previous bosses. I mean, look at this!

Chapter 37: The Man with 100 Plans said:
I had read this in One Piece wikia, but never actually saw it the first few times around. Captain Morgan got the base because he “debated” Captain Kuro, but alas it was all according to plan!

Chapter 41: To the Sea said:
The mandatory post-win celebration! Now four members strong!

31: kaya finding out the truth about her butler
32: the pirates losing their shit when kuro arrived
33: zoro kicking ass after getting his swords back
34: luffy waking up and immediately being hit in the back of his head with djangos weapon
35: the three kids going to town on kuro

Syrup village oversll thoughts:
Went on a bit too long imo, but good. Kuro was the first actually scary villain, but his plan was far too complicated. Usopp has never been top for me of the strawhats, but he is the most fleshed out by the point he joins out of the current four, except for maybe luffy

I would disagree actually that Kuro was the first scary villain. Buggy was drawn to be quite intimidating during the Orange Town arc. Kuro is interesting because of how cunning he is. Who truly suspected that Kuro was who he was during their first read? Who would have expected him to have been so ruthless and cutthroat.

Ussop was actually one of my favorite characters in the series growing up. He has slipped down the list over time but I still think he is an important character in more ways than one and this arc encapsulates everything that is amazing about Ussop.
1. His lying. He lies to the village people, he lies to the crew, he lies to his best friends. Lying is obviously not a good trait, but look at his intent when he lies. He never lies to harm people, rather he does it to bring smiles to people's faces. He tells lies to Kaya because he is trying to make her laugh and help her since she deals with being sick and depressed.

2. He is brave. Ussop is always seen as the coward in the group, which is true, but he is also a very brave individual when it involves selfless action. Ussop is scared of pretty much anything, but he is willing to overcome his fears when it means helping others. He knew that Kuro was going to destroy the village and kill Kaya. He knew that he couldn't beat Kuro, but he couldn't live with the idea that his village might get hurt. He overcame his fear in order to protect them. Being brave doesn't mean you run into any situation with the bravado of Zoro or Sanji. Being brave is knowing that you are scared of something, but still facing it.

3. He smart. Ussop and his battles tend to have nothing to do with being strong or durable. Even though he is now at the comparable strength of Pre-Timeskip Luffy, he usually has to win his battles by out-thinking the enemy. I actually feel like Ussop is an alagory for Anansi. For those who don't know of Anansi, he is basically an African trickster God who sometimes takes the form of a man, sometimes a spider, and sometimes something in between. He is kinda like Loki but the main point of his stories is that he always accomplishes his goals through using his mind. Ussop is supposedly South African... so I could see it.

Kuro was fishy from the start 😭😭
You never trust the nice characters ! That's rule number 1
Yeah, but sometimes that is just a Red Herring.

Kuro wasn't overly nice. He was completely rude to Ussop and the Strawhats. Oda did a good job of establishing the relationship he had with Kaya. Sure you could be suspicious of him, but the relationships he had made it unlikely that he was anything more than what he portrayed himself to be. It gets a lot more ruthless when you consider that the plan he had in place, he had from the very beginning. Every move he took was completely premeditated. It was a complete 180 to the personality he carefully cultivated.

I can see where you're coming from, it's probably my experience with Buggy as a character that is speaking, I can't take him seriously at all lol

Baratie Arc favorite parts in each chapter:
42: making of the straw hat pirate flag
43: sanji beating up fullbody
44: sanji feeding gin
45: luffy being absolutely useless in the kitchen
46: krieg arriving
47: krieg recognizing zeff
48: gin talking about how mihawk took them all out

53: Sanji and Luffy getting ready for battle
54: Luffy and Sanji drawing blood from Pearl
55: Zeff repelling the fireballs
56: flashback with zeff and sanji meeting
57: Zeff sacrificing his leg for sanji
58: Zeff passing his dream of finding the all blue to sanji
59: Luffy telling sanji he cant pay his debt back by dying
60: Sanji vs Gin and Luffy vs Krieg beginning
61: Gin unable to kill Sanji
62: Gin saving Sanji and Luffy
63: Luffy breaking through krieg's thorn shield.
64: Luffy withstanding krieg's explosive spear
65: Luffy beating krieg down
66: Sanji saving luffy from drowning
67: The chefs trying to freeze sanji out to make him join luffy
68: Sanji's farewell
Overall thoughts:
The best arc so far, and did not feel dragged out like some of the others even though its longer than any before it. Sanji's backstory and relationships are even deeper and more emotional than what we know of other crew members so far. Krieg may not be a deep villain, but Gin fills that spot, and krieg instead takes care of the threatening part. The arc also opens up the world far more with mihawk, grand line, etc.

I agree that out of the arcs we have seen so far, Baratie has been the most interesting and well written arcs so far. I think you hit all the good parts of the arc, except for a part that has really hit me recently since rewatching the anime with my girlfriend:

The Friendship Dynamic of Zoro and Sanji. In this arc we see something different involving the recruitment of Sanji in my opinion. Usually Luffy shows up and inspires his crewmembers to follow their dreams and he is the reason that crewmembers join the ship. I would argue that Sanji didn't feel the inspiration to pursue his dreams because of what Luffy did, but rather the actions of Zoro. More specifically, I am talking about when Zoro takes on Mihawk.

During that grueling battle Sanji seems to recognize that Zoro isn't a match for Mihawk. When he sees that Zoro might die he even screams that Zoro should give up on his goal and that he is basically aiming for the impossible. He begins to wrestle with the reality of his own dream, something that he has always been relentlessly laughed at for. When he is telling Zoro to give up, he is fighting an internal battle... and when Zoro finally falls in defeat... who jumps in to save him?? Sanji.

After the fights are over, Sanji's dream has been reignited. He finally is able to talk about his dream of the All Blue again. Something that Zeff recognizes and decides that Sanji needs to go with Luffy. I find it interesting that Sanji is a very self sacrificing character.. he is very passionate and caring, but he has a very low opinion of himself... he was willing to give up his dream of the All Blue for Zeff and the Baratie.

I can see where you're coming from, it's probably my experience with Buggy as a character that is speaking, I can't take him seriously at all lol
I can understand that. Buggy has went from being a formidable foe to being the butt of jokes for the series. I actually am kind of curious about Buggy's backstory before Roger. He has been dressed up like a clown since he was a kid... why is that? Lol. What happened to him to make him the way he is?

so is it true that when kuro hypnotised someone to take his place and hypnotised a marine to believe he caught Kuro, that marine was Axe Arm Morgan and that's why he was so twisted on his own greatness?

Baratie Arc
Reaction: Good arc. Now we’re getting into it! Not top, or even high middle, tier, but was a revelation upon rewatch. The emotional backbone that makes One Piece so great. I thought Krieg was lacking as a villain, but Gin pulled the arc forward. The Sanji/Zeff relationship, now that I’m a father, meant more to me this time around. Mihawk/Zoro scene is a thing of legend - goes without saying. Overall, best character development, fighting, and emotion so far. I really enjoyed it!

Takeaway: My biggest takeaway was that Zeff knew Mihawk, at least his infamy (see below panels). That brings the whole thing around, where the old meets the new.

Cons: My biggest complaint is Sanji’s lack of continuance with All Blue. Man’s mentioned it like twice after this. Such a lost opportunit.

Best Character: This one was tough. I’d have to go with Gin, with Zeff a close second. Gin’s development and bad-ass scenes took me by surprise - did not remember it being that way!

Chapter 42: Yosaku & Johnny said:
The first Straw Hat flag. Masterpiece.

I didn’t catch on my first read that Yosaku/Johnny telegraphed Mihawk’s appearance. Look at Zoro’s face!

Chapter 43: Sanji Enters said:
First badass scene with Sanji! What an entrance!

Great use of trauma by Oda. Once you feel that pain, you understand. Amazing.

Chapter 50: To Each His Own Way said:
Mihawk’s response as to why he went after Krueger Pirates. What a disrespectful G!

We all know this iconic line. What I missed was Zeff incredulous that one with infamy like Mihawk would utter such words. Really came full circle why Zeff pushed Sanji to go to Straw Hats, seeing both Luffy/Zoro potential.

Chapter 57: Because of Dreams said:
This was censored in the anime. What an emotional act for someone who has your own dream. What will. This really put into perspective how dreams in the OP world stand above everything. Respect, Zeff.

Chapter 58: Damn Geezer said:
Loved this panel. Really the heart of this arc. ❤

Chapter 61: Demon said:
Very clearly an Oda dad joke, since he’s Monkey D. Luffy. lmao!

Chapter 65: Prepardness said:
Loved this panel. One of my favorite things is One Piece is Luffy standing over or defeating a bigger villain. This was the first big opponent down!

Chapter 67: Soup said:
The climax. Zeff putting his needs above Sanji shows the true love. Got me chocked up! I’m pa sad Sanji’s Dream has not been talked about much after.
