Sakaiminato, The Vermilion Town

Located upon South Blue is an island known as the Vermilion Island, home to the Vermilion Bird, Suzaku. The Island goes through a cycle of seasons once every decade, following the rise and rebirth of Suzaku. The Vermilion Bird rises from its ashes at the start of Spring and 'dies' in Autumn, where its egg will stay unmoved for the period of Winter. The town of Sakaiminato is the only place of civilization on the island.

Suzaku is considered the guardian deity of the island, not because she protects its inhabitants but because she drives away an evil that infects the island. The Vermilion Island used to be uninhabited, but the appearance of humans and dwarves over the last few centuries has given rise to an evil, known by locals as 'Yokai', a race of demons that has infected the town. They seems to appear during the winters where Suzaku remains an egg which led to attacks to the town from both outside and within occurring very frequently. In the winters, heavy fog and snow covers the city making it difficult to stay outside of the houses for long period of time.

In the current cycle of winter, attacks by demons have not only dramatically increased but also became even stronger - causing the local militia to be unable to deal with the threats any longer, thus forcing to look for help by the World Government to help drive away them away until Suzaku rises upon her ash once more to rid Sakaiminato of the Yokai. On the last year of Winter, things have became much more dangerous than it ever has in Sakaiminato as on the last few days of the Winter, an infamous event feared by many known as the Hyakki Yagyō, or also called the 'Night Parade of One Hundred Demons' occurs, filled with incredibly powerful Yokais.

The current ruler is Yotsuya whom have led the defense of Sakaiminato throughout the decade in order to protect the egg of Suzaku. Her request for help from the World Government has been met, as a contingent of marine forces now bolster the town's defense.

Disclaimer: Defeating all demons is NOT required to beat the island for the as it is stated in the 'Rewards' section that only Suzaku's revival is required. This island is made more in part for a 'wave survival' sort of theme which is recommended for a group rather than solo - however it is entirely possible to do it alone regardless of it.

Streets of Sakaiminato

The main hub of the town, used to be bustling with life where most human and dwarves - the town whilst quite large are essentially one giant area, which connects to the temple of Suzaku and Sakaiminato Port. As of now, the demons have infiltrated the Sakaiminato and even disguise themselves as humans, lurking in the night to prey upon the unsuspecting, causing large problems not just from the Yokai Army but also from within. The streets of Sakaiminato is also were most of the battles against Yokais would take place should they breach the gates.

The Temple of Suzaku is the largest and highest building in Sakaiminato, where the Suzaku eventually goes through the cycle of rebirth at its open roof nest. Originally Suzaku performs the cycle of rebirth at an unnamed location but after a long while, Suzaku would head to the building on its own and took up residence as her nest, resulting in turning the building into a temple of worship. Locals of Sakaiminato typically do not disturb the phoenix as the mythical bird is not 'allied' with the locals, mostly ignoring the locals. Suzaku is technically still 'alive' even when she is in her 'egg' form as she is able to sense her surroundings to see what is going on.

Sakaiminato Port

The back of Sakaiminato is its port, this is the only 'safe' way to enter Sakaiminato during its winter cycle as the frozen sea is partially melted to ensure ships are able to enter Sakaiminato through a singular path straight towards the dock. The port area is usually the safest part of the town as the demons that are able to traverse through water are not particularly powerful or large in quantity.

[The Vermillion Town, Sakaiminato]
Post 1 - @Aro @Lamby

Winter had laid its claim over Vermilion Island with a patience that felt deliberate, snow settling into a deceptive calm while a low, suffocating fog curled through Sakaiminato like something alive. This was an island shaped by cycles, yet never ruled by a single force. The rise and fall of Suzaku marked time, but culture endured by will, structure persisted through enforcement, and chaos crept in where neither could fully reach. They did not merge into one truth, only pressed against one another, sometimes clashing, sometimes coexisting, never yielding entirely.

Sakaiminato still stood as proof of that fragile balance. Its broad, interconnected streets linked port, market, and the towering Temple of Suzaku into a single, enduring structure, one that refused to collapse even under winter’s weight. The arrival of the Marines added another layer rather than replacing what existed, their rigid sense of justice intersecting with a culture rooted in survival rather than obedience. Order was present, but not absolute, stretched thin against something older and far less predictable.

High above, the Temple cradled Suzaku’s egg beneath an open sky, its stillness carrying a quiet awareness that unsettled more than it reassured. She was no true guardian of the people, not in the way they might have wished, but her existence alone held back something worse. That distinction lingered heavily, because it meant the island was not protected, only spared from a greater darkness.

What remained was the Yokai. They did not descend in waves but seeped into the town, folding into its rhythms, wearing familiar faces and eroding trust from within. Winter emboldened them, the fog concealing their movements, the snow silencing their steps, until the line between neighbour and enemy became uncertain. Chaos thrived not in open destruction, but in quiet infiltration, in the steady unraveling of certainty.

The Marines imposed what order they could, their patrols cutting through the streets with measured precision, their presence a firm but incomplete answer. Their justice relied on clear lines, yet here those lines dissolved too easily, leaving them to hold ground rather than claim it. They became part of the balance, not its solution.

At the port, a fragile sense of safety lingered where the sea allowed passage along a narrow thawed path. Supplies and reinforcements arrived, and for a moment control felt tangible, yet even here the fog never fully lifted, and the sense of being watched endured. Safety, like everything else on the island, was conditional.

All of it led toward the inevitable. The final stretch of winter did not promise relief, only escalation as the Hyakki Yagyō drew near, no longer subtle, no longer hidden. The Yokai would gather, power would surface without disguise, and the fragile tension between culture, structure, and chaos would be tested in its most violent form.

Yotsuya understood this truth. Leadership here was not about control but endurance, about holding long enough for something beyond human effort to take hold. Her alliance with the Marines was necessity, not unity, each force remaining distinct, intersecting only where survival demanded it.

And so the island waited, not in stillness but in strain. Snow fell, fog thickened, and unseen movements carried on beneath it all. Order had not erased chaos, culture had not overcome structure, and justice had not claimed dominion. They remained separate, pressing against one another in a space too narrow for any to prevail.

For now, that was enough to keep Sakaiminato standing. Whether it would endure the final nights of winter was a question left unanswered.

What are you doing out here?
"Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a Kamen Rider--", Thurnston spoke.

"No you didn't." Swiftly answered his crewmate.

And they were right, this was a lie. Thurnston had only developed a recent infatuation with the concept from a show, it was a rough idea dubbed "a sister to the Super Sentai," it was filled with action. It was filled with exotic explosions and devices, and Thurnston to a great inspiration from it.

A brief bit of History...
A few weeks ago, Thurnston and his crew set sail from their home island. The people of the island weren't dedicated warriors or conquerors instead they were a devote people. An entire island filled with people strong in faith and devoted to chasing God. As such, the economy was raised upon the idea on capitalizing on the gifts given to each of their members, as for Thurnston and his right-hand man Coyote they were gifted with supreme talent for battle, a tenacity to survive and the thrill-seeking personality for adventure however that's not their sole purpose for being out at sea.

Their homeland was desecrated and enslaved by the world government, under jurisdiction of an unknown person of considerable authority. They don't know by who, or by what these things came to be but their hope in the LORD remains strong. Thurnston is cross, and he seeks answers; he seeks strength and he beseeched the LORD for guidance however before an answer was given, their navigator's log pose locked unto a strange island. Sakaiminato, a land with an ominous presence that sturred ther spirits within the crew members aborad their ship.

...Back to the Main Story!
In the captain's quarters a conversation springs, between two minds--

"You're right, I didn't but calling me out on it doesn't make this conversation any less short. Johnnie, you know my frustrations and I'm sure you have a good enough understanding of what it is I seek." Continued Thurnston. He sat in a black, leather swivel chair; behind a thick mahogany desk with nothing but a huge bible and a lantern on it's face. The warm, room teetered with the ship, ever so slightly bobbing as the ocean currents carried them deeper into the outskirts of Sakaiminato. On the other side of the table, Johnnie-Mollie Johanson, sat. He was a young navigator, only two years younger than Thurnston.

"Answers, or is it power? Everyone on the ship feels the same way you do, and we all understand that thriving to take revenge for what they did only pushes us further into wrath. Remember it is written that the LORD will avenge his righteous by his own hand and that we shouldn't give place unto our anger." Replied Johnnie.

"I'm not giving place unto my anger, I'm the Regent of our island. I bare a huge responsibility on my shoulders, to be absent at a time like this--", Thurnston's voice grew in passion, "--when there's no king present, sows doubt amongst our people."

"Do you know that all I have to say to them is that we will return with resources, with strength and a place to call home? God will keep us and deliver us but what about the responsibility placed unto me? Not only as the Regent but as the Captain of this vessel. I want to go home and free our people but they are placed under subjection by the unrighteousness of a corrupt Government!"

"...And what would going back home and overthrowing them bring?"
Johnnie replied.

Thurnston paused.

"If we go back, and the two of our strongest wage war against the battalion that currently places our people in chains, what's stopping the World Government from sending yet another battalion with more soldiers to destroy what we have left. You're being impatient, and worse, you're being angry. I don't know what God had showed you whilst you prayed but, you have to be careful of the decisions you want to make and do." Johnnie added, the young boy rose from his chair and turned to walk out but paused, holding onto the back of his seat.

"I know there's a lot of pressure on your shoulders, I want to go back and give them a piece of my mind as well but until we find a solution we're stuck floating in the ocean. I'm going to see the others, maybe pass a few words to Coyote, I have to ensure we're on the right path to the next island."

Thurnston was quiet, he looked down at his bible and frustration boiled within him. He let off a powerful exhale before replying, "...Okay."

Coyote exhaled, releasing a visible cloud into the cold air.

She stood steady at the doorway of Thurnston's quarters before pushing opening the door, probably surprising Johnnie in the process. She had felt Thurnston's distress from the helm of the ship using her color of observation haki and came to check on him. It had been a couple of weeks since they had left their home and she knew leaving the country in it's state had been taking a toll on him since the voyage began.

"There's an island up ahead." She said gruffly, trying to conceal her gender as she normally did.

Her hooded white cloak did most of the heavy lifting, but she still had to be careful. Coyote was a member of the Order of Micheal's Blade, afterall. Higher ranking members like her were not allowed to reveal their identities. Despite this, she and Thurnston maintained a tight friendship for the past couple of years. As Regent, he was allowed to see her true appearance and remained very excited for the day that happens.

But Coyote wasn't ready just yet, and Thurnston respected that. For now though, he still thinks she is male.

"We land in ten." She continued. "After we arrive, we need to wait for the log pose to reset. In the meantime, we check inventory and confirm what we have to restock."

Coyote's eyes shifts between Thurnston and Johnnie as she finishes speaking. They can't tell, but she is raising an eyebrow.

"I sensed your distress. Do we have a problem?"

[The Vermillion Town, Sakaiminato]
Post 2 - @Aro @Lamby

The island emerged from the mist like a bad memory, all crooked rooftops, leaning lanterns and a shoreline wrapped in fog thick enough to choke on. Sakaiminato sat beneath a bruised sky, its harbour eerily still, yet alive in all the wrong ways. Fishermen hauled in empty nets while merchants smiled too easily, their faces stretched just a touch too wide, their eyes lingering a heartbeat too long. They looked human, sounded human, even laughed like humans, but there was something rotten beneath the skin, something old and hungry that prickled at the spine.

A violent shudder tore through the vessel without warning. Timber screamed, iron rang, and the deck bucked hard enough to send loose cargo skidding across the planks. Above, startled cries broke out as sailors rushed for handholds and weapons alike. The sea beside the ship erupted in a wall of black water, and from its depths something enormous hauled itself into view.

It was a brute from a nightmare, towering over the deck with skin the colour of dried blood stretched across slabs of monstrous muscle. Heavy iron shackles bit into its wrists, each trailing vast chains connected to stone spheres that smashed into the hull with enough force to splinter wood. Its face was a mask of rage, tusks jutting from a maw that opened in a roar so deep it seemed to shake the harbour itself. Every lantern along the docks flickered at once.

Then the town changed. The fishermen dropped their nets. Merchants abandoned their stalls. Smiles twisted into snarls as human faces peeled away like wet parchment, revealing lesser yokai beneath, lean and malformed, with yellowed fangs, hooked claws and eyes that gleamed with feral malice. They spilled from alleyways, rooftops and market squares, swarming towards the waterfront in a chittering tide.

Sakaiminato had shed its disguise. What had seemed a quiet harbour was, in truth, a feeding ground. And now, with the Onryoki standing astride the waters and a legion of lesser yokai closing in, the island was ready to welcome its guests properly.

"There's an island up ahead." She said gruffly, trying to conceal her gender as she normally did.
Johnnie flinched, he stopped as the door swung open and he retreated by half a step. His eyes widened and for a moment, his anxiety spiked. "At least Coyote knows..." He thought, he relaxed and let off a brief sigh; relieved that it was him and not anyone else.

"Yes, Sir." He replied. Johnnie lifted his left hand showing her the log pose on his wrist, "I was coming to check if we were still set on the right course for the next island but you beat me to it." He gently added, "Thurnston and I were having a discussion about what he should do. It was a brief collision of ideals."

Thurnston's eyes tracked the both of them, Johnnie who had rejected his proposition for revenge and Coyote who'd been alerted by the slightest bit of distress; "Coyote wouldn't agree with me, if I told her that I want to go back home. I want to do something, I want to act upon the authority that God had ordained me to recieve. I don't agree with my silence, I don't stand for being out on a separate island whilst our people are put into unfair subjection; what choice do I have?" He rhetorically questioned in thought, a little silence stirred into the room, growing a brief tension that only got thicker as Johnnie's words were left to resonate.

One second passed, then two, then five and then Thurnston stood from his chair and spoke.

"No, we don't have a problem. We had a little disagreement, nothing detrimental; if I were to give proper credit to where it's due, Johnnie helped edify me." He finally replied. "I was praying for guidance and when I was overcome with my own stress I sought Johnnie's help."

"Everything should be fine as of now."
He said, he walked across the room and met the two that stood at the entrance, and exit, to his quarters. He patted Johnnie and the shoulder and gestured outwards for them to go to the deck: "I don't want Coyote to see that I'm being tempted in this way. I am our Regent, let me walk and stand with equity and righteous judgment." He thought, he assured himself and buried his burning guilt.

Upon the deck and all about the ship tending to it's delicate needs, their crew hustled and bustled. They were strong men, they too carried a faith in the LORD but unlike some of their members they were not blessed with strength, their powers were attributed to a different gift. Although, as the boat trekked through the ocean and strange mist encapsulated them, the air grew thicker and the Holy Ghost within each them issued a clear warning: they were given a burning fear, an uneasiness as if the place they adventured into was a place not welcomed by God. As Johnnie had left them, the men lead the boat to the island's docks hoping to drop anchor but there was something clearly wrong with the land they had come to.

The men murmured amongst themselves, feeling the cold and unease: "What kind of place is this? Has the LORD abandoned us, why do I feel so alone?"

The sailors on the harbor, only added to this discomfort; the men even questioned the judgment of their navigator. Thurnston could feel the discomfort as well, their Regent closed his eyes for a moment, narrowing his focus and activated his observation haki. "Where are we?" He slowly spoke, confused as the voices of the people nearby only radiated malicious intent. The vessel shuddered and shook, loose cargo crates that the crewman used to sit on slid across the deck and barrels fell over and tumbled almost going overboard and then-- SPLOOOSH!! Black sea water splashed unto the deck, men fell over surprised as a nightmare surfaced from the water! It smashed into the ship and roared!

The Men screamed for their lives, and Thurnston rushed passed Johnnie and Coyote shoving them out of the way-- His boots slapped against the planks, his footsteps-- too fast to count, he armed himself almost immediately. He brandished his signature weapon, he leapt after the creature and attacked first, twirling what seemed to be a jet-black pole arm: he held it from the basis of a central and balanced stance, with the bladed head jutting outwards as his hands held the middle of the shaft, he lifted the spear overhead; he clad it in armament haki and brought it down from above slashing at the creature's face; primed to split it's brain in two!

Beneath her hood, Coyote eye'd both Johnnie and Thurnston carefully as they explained themselves. Her gaze lingered on Thurnston longer, as he took a while to gather himself. Then he stood from his chair, speaking while he walked towards them both.

"No, we don't have a problem. We had a little disagreement, nothing detrimental; if I were to give proper credit to where it's due, Johnnie helped edify me. I was praying for guidance and when I was overcome with my own stress I sought Johnnie's help. Everything should be fine as of now."

She knew he was lying, but decided not to press further. The young Regent had alot of pressure on his shoulders. His heart screamed to save his people. But it wasn't time.

Yahweh did not will it.

Still she understood his turmoil, for deep in her core, she too felt something was amiss in their poor country. Something the eye couldn't see. Maybe the Ruach HaKodesh was trying to guide her to the truth? Only time and deep prayer could tell. For now, they had to focus on their first task.

Docking the ship.

Coyote nodded her head, accepting his truth as they made their way to the deck. She silently left them and took her place behind the ship's helm, guiding it the rest of the way as they drew closer and closer to the island.

-----------------

It didn't take long for everyone on board to sense something was wrong. The first to notice was Coyote herself. Her eyes squinted as an eerie mist began to swallow them whole. The island's presence made itself clear.

It was not welcomed by Yahweh.

Though remaining calm, she remained on high alert as their men lead the boat to docks. She heard them whisper among themselves in terror, as dread filled every fiber of their being.

"Be still" Coyote reassured as she walked past them. "Our father has not abandoned us in this time." Her cloak danced in the wind, while keeping her face concealed.

She took her place at Thurnston's side as he used his Observation Haki to scope out the island. She saw his face contort as he sensed the ill intent from the people on the dock. Suddenly, the vessel vibrated, sending crates, barrels and men tumbling across the deck. The men screamed in terror as a creature emerged from the black depths and roared as it smashed into the vessels.

"Shedim." Coyote said with a hint of disdain in her voice.

Demons.

The men screamed for their lives as Thurston shoved past her and Johnnie as blinding speed. He drew his weapon and attacked. Coyote turned around to addressed crew.

"Be still!" She said gruffly, but loud enough for everyone to hear. "Draw your weapons and take arms instead of turning to flee! There is nothing to fear. Yahweh watches over us."

Her Observation Haki remained active, sensing the approaching legion. They poured from the alleyways, scrambled onto the rooftops and flooded the streets of the market squares. She turned to Johnnie.

"Move with haste navigator." She said in a joking tone. "Better to gun the Shedim down now, than to let them reach the ship and kill us later." Coyote turned around to face what was to come. "If it is really our time to die, let us draw our last breath defending our people."

She let out a low sigh. "What an island our Father has chosen to be our first."

[The Vermillion Town, Sakaiminato]
Post 2 - @Aro @Lamby

The Grand Temperance drifted through the frozen channel towards Sakaiminato beneath a suffocating blanket of fog, its lanterns reduced to pale smears of light against the dark. From the deck, the island looked less inhabited than haunted. Snow coated the harbour roofs in thick layers, temple bells echoed faintly somewhere beyond the mist, and along the docks, figures stood unnaturally still as the ship approached. Sailors should have called out by now. Dockworkers should have moved to receive mooring lines. Instead, silence lingered too long, broken only by the groan of timber and the uneasy murmuring spreading amongst the crew.

Whatever disagreement had taken place below deck was quickly overshadowed by the atmosphere swallowing the vessel whole. Men who had crossed violent seas and endured hardship without complaint now exchanged uncertain glances, rubbing cold hands together whilst a deep, instinctive dread settled into their bones. The air itself felt wrong. Not dangerous in the ordinary sense, but hollow, as though something sacred had long since abandoned the island and left only its shadow behind. Even the townsfolk watching from the harbour stirred discomfort. Their smiles lingered too long, their movements seemed delayed, unnatural, and several pairs of eyes reflected strangely beneath the lantern light. One old fisherman bowed his head politely whilst his jaw stretched just slightly wider than it should have. A woman carrying baskets turned away, revealing fingers tipped with darkened claws before they slipped back beneath her sleeves. Another figure vanished into an alleyway, though the sound of footsteps never followed.

The crew noticed. Fear spread quickly after that.

Then the sea erupted.

Black water crashed over the deck as something colossal slammed against the hull hard enough to shake the entire ship. Crates skidded loose, barrels toppled across the planks, and several men were thrown from their feet as a monstrous shape dragged itself from the freezing depths. Chains rattled violently as the creature rose towering above the vessel, its swollen body wrapped in iron restraints that hung from its limbs like execution weights. Pale flesh bulged over monstrous muscle, crimson hair hung wild around a face twisted into a permanent snarl, and in each massive hand it dragged iron spheres large enough to crush a man flat. The thing looked less alive than condemned, like a demon hauled screaming from the pits of hell itself.

Panic swept the deck. Some sailors stumbled backwards whilst others froze outright, but beyond the ship the harbour erupted as well. The watching townsfolk began to change. Skin split at the jawline to reveal rows of sharpened teeth, eyes glowed amber beneath human disguises, and hunched figures poured from alleyways and rooftops with distorted laughter spilling from their throats. Low-ranking Yokai, creatures that had hidden amongst the living, finally cast aside their borrowed faces now that blood and terror had filled the air.

The island had been watching them since the moment they entered its waters.

Now it welcomed them properly.
