Foreword: I do not make theories to be correct, but to fill in the blanks of an ongoing story for myself. I feel no disappointment in being disproven, and generally look forward to finding out the truth of the matter.

So I thought I'd share my personal theories on what happened during the Void Century, and who Joy Boy was.

The Beginning

There was an island where giants and humans lived together, which is now known as Laugh Tale, but its previous name is unknown (Clover of Ohara found out, but was killed before he could name it). One giant, Joy Boy, was a carefree spirit who wanted to see the world. Back then, pirates likely did not exist, and if they did, they were more like Blackbeard than Luffy. As such, when Joy Boy set out to sea in order to fulfil his dream, he was a sailor or adventurer, not a pirate. He wore the Straw Hat that now resides in Marie Geoise.

The First Journey: An Eye-Opener

While I can't really begin to speculate about his crew members, I feel reasonably certain that his early voyage involved Zou and Wano, where he made allies that would prove instrumental. He likely spent decades exploring the entire world, learning of the hardships that separation and isolation had caused. With this new knowledge, he formed a new dream, to unite the world.

The Second Journey: Gathering Interest

With this new dream in mind, he set off around the world a second time, to get the rulers of the world on board with his message. At first many countries were more than happy to go along with it, Fishman Island even wanted him to bring their people to the surface (work which began with the building of Noah). However, things would take a turn for the worse.

The Third Journey: A Conspiracy

Some world leaders became suspicious of Joy Boy, after learning of his country of origin. Learning of his plans to bring the Fishmen to the surface, and his ties to the Minks, only furthered the divide. These rulers wanted to unite the world, but they wanted to do it their way. Joy Boy, considering the possibility that he may not live to fulfil his dream, went to Wano and asked the Kozuki clan to help him create the Poneglyphs: his own messages to preserve a history in the making. He went around the world carving messages into these Poneglyphs, as the rulers of twenty nations gathered to figure out a way to take down Joy Boy.

The Extreme Measures that Formed the World Government

The twenty leaders confronted Joy Boy in his home country, the resulting battle leading to the island's destruction. In the mean time, Joy Boy's crew escaped to safety, per his instruction, carrying new names including the 'D' that signifies their will, Joy Boy's will to see and free and united world. The leaders became the World Nobles, creating a space directly above Fishman Island to call their home (Marie Geoise). The Nefertari family of Alabasta objected however, in part due to the guilt of destroying an entire kingdom, and in part due to seeing the actions of the World Nobles as hubris.

The Cover Up and the Aftermath

The newly formed World Government did everything in their power to cover up the existence of Joy Boy and his country of origin. As they had more success, they gained more allies. They also established the Heavenly Tribute as they desired compensation for their efforts in 'uniting' the world. At some point, they began to take slaves, thinking they were owed the lives of the people below them. As their slave numbers increased, they had the idea to start working on Tequila Wolf, a bridge to connect islands, another way they mishandled Joy Boy's dream for their own ends.

Meanwhile, those with the will of D passed it down from generation to generation. Some managed to retain Joy Boy's inherited will, as the enemies of the World Nobles, people who desired freedom and unity. Others simply forgot their history and lived mostly normal lives, and some became a darker version of the will, with a desire to rule over all, the way the original World Nobles did.

The Unknown Puzzle Piece

What I can't really theorise about is the true nature of the Gorosei and Im. Are they are immortal or not? Are they descendants of World Nobles or were they unrelated people who aided the originals? Were they originally from Joy Boy's country? All that is really clear is that they are more influential in the present than the Celestial Dragons.

Anyway, these are my thoughts on what Joy Boy's life, and subsequently the Void Century, was like. Hope you enjoyed reading.

A nice, easy read with clear organization and flow, very good!

Do you have any thoughts as to why different D.'s all have different last names? I imagine that there isn't a D. family, but more that the refugees of the Ancient Kingdom all added the letter to their names as a symbol or something to that effect.

Survivors of the ancient kingdom carrying the D is also a possibility. I think it might be Joy Boy's crew, as they shared his dream. Maybe both did, which might explain why not every D inherits his will. I'm not sure if they just added the D or whether they changed their full names to better evade the government, or whether the current surnames all date back to the original members. I do think it's a symbol, though I don't want to theorise about what the symbol means as I like having that part as a mystery for now (personally).

:dva: I like where you are going, I once made a theory about the Giant Strawhat and how it belonged to an ancient giant kind who cooperated with humans and this didn't fit in the plans of the twnty kingdoms, why they allied and why the war back then started.
Links back to how giants were mistreated and abused. I think their last will was building Wano for the humans. Kaido knows, Kaido wants revenge.
You guys will like my future theories.
